Discussion
After 5 years in the post. What do you think. Good, bad, or indifferent? Mayor Sadiq Khan will choose the successor along with the Home Secretary

Oh the horror! FFS, it's like waking up in the 1950 being on here sometimes.
Only if you interpret it that way. Did I say that would be a bad thing?I wouldn't care who it is, as long as they are the best candidate for the job.

Only if you interpret it that way. Did I say that would be a bad thing? It is a shame that the met commissioner role gets so tied up with political tape and, although the most senior police role, is actually in some ways more subservient to politics than the chief constables of counties. Khan disagrees with the visible armed police presence and the use of spit hoods etc. Hogan-Howe has been one of the more effective commissioners and was a loss to Merseyside when he moved up to the top job. Problem with this job is that you are damned if you do and damned if you don't which the likes of Ian Blair found out to their cost. I for one, do not think its right that it is a political appointment on fixed terms.
Who next? My money would be on Steve Finnigan if an outsider. If its an internal promotion then maybe Craig Mackey or Patricia Gallen

He was quite outspoken about the cuts affecting his force, stating that Lancashire Police will be "unviable as a police service by 2020" if the government carried on with their proposals.
One thing is for certain. It will be somebody who doesn't rock the boat, is prepared to bow down to their political masters, is really only in it for the power and themselves and someone who doesn't really give a toss about the officers on the ground.
ps - I don't know why you say Hogan- Howe was a loss to Merseyside ?
He did like riding his horse around Mather Avenue (force training centre) though. Allegedly.

Haha yes. I was called in to help him modernise the force and it was very different when he departed to what it was like when he joined. Bernard is an old fashioned copper at heart and that, in some ways, is his downfall in London. The post of commissioner is too political and it shouldn't be. You may be right about the Lancs CCHe did like riding his horse around Mather Avenue (force training centre) though. Allegedly.
Yeah I noticed him on itv earlier. I have to say most of his answers were rather politician-like e.g. Saying that when he had come to office stop & search figures were too high. So he reduced them. But knife crime went down. So they were targetting the right people. It was gangs, but now it's not. Knife crime was reducing when they were locking up the gangs, but now they're being released which is the reason (excuse!) knife crime is rising again. Etc.
Basically he was a bit teflon.
