Just out of interest, what is the approx. value of the watch?

If it was £50 - £100 or so, then it's not really worth the company re-stocking it. If it was £500 plus, they seam far to relaxed about getting it back!
Over £650 - I agree, they have been rather tardy in reclaiming it

update - still got the watch, in the un-opened parcel that it was originally delivered in

I'm really staggered that a company can be so casual with a £650 item, especially as I've alerted them to their error

Beginning to wish I'd said "collect it in XX days or I'll dispose of it as I see fit..."

What does 'disposal' mean legally?

Does the watch have to be destroyed with evidence obtained and kept?

Can the op legally keep it to use or sell to make a profit?

Can it be gifted to charity, a hospice etc.?

Is there not a time frame beyond which it becomes your's? You could end up looking after it for them forever.

Update

Three weeks after I last emailed the watch company, they've got in touch to ask if they can arrange a collection in mid November...

In which case, they have exceeded the agreed time frame for making the arrangement (15/11).

They may be inadvertently doing you a favour. See below

You can still do this. Point out their failure as above and give them 14 days or else you will dispose of it.
A nice early Christmas present for someone you know... smile

I can't speak to your obligations, but you could ask them to arrange a courier with a nearby drop off point. They're usually in mini markets or newsagents so meets your times.

I have to say, I was fairly surprised when they couldn't find it in themselves to offer any discount at all for me to buy the watch. I
I'm aghast; this is why I personally have every invoice that leaves my company come through my office so i can agree it. Getting over payments back is much harder that you'd have ever thought!!!!!!!

Disregarding the watch companies lack of attention to detail, why, in a month of Sundays are you "fairly surprised" that you were not offered a discount for honesty!! A reward for being honest!! This mindset is so far removed of how I think that I find it almost alien.

God forbid us all if this is what the country is turning into. Get on Jeremy Kyle and let the nation decide what to do with this huge issue that you don't have the intellectual ability to deal with yourself; AKA, get off your arse and just send it back to them. If you don't want to do that as it is probably a point of principle, keep it and be sure to say to the recipient of said watch, "here you go I nicked this for you".

Why should the op go the trouble and expense of sending it back?

Whooaaa there buddy - I think you may have misunderstood

This boils down to:

  • Please don't send me another watch - everything's sorted
  • You've sent me another watch anyway. There are costs involved with collection and restocking etc - I'll buy it if you offer a discount as this way we both win. If not could you come and collect it?
This is in no way an 'honesty reward', it's just a pragmatic approach. How do you react when someone tries to book time off ffs, shoot them?!

At last! - collection arranged for 3:00pm today - two months and one day after I advised the watch company that they were about to deliver a watch I hadn't ordered...

I'd best withdraw that Gumtree ad then.... rolleyes

Amazing - absolutely amazing....

Now that the watch company has had the watch back, they've refunded me the money that I didn't pay for the watch that I didn't order....

They seem to be hell bent on giving me a watch and now I've sent it back, they have given me the money instead...

I know the law about retaining money credited in error, so I'll be calling them in the morning, but I wonder how much profit is lost for companies due to admin cock-ups

£650 may be the retail price but it probably only cost them £50, and no I'm not joking.

Either this or they just want to waste as much of your time as possible. They do seem spectacularly incompetent
