So I was coming down the A217 today, where it crosses the A232 by Cheam and Sutton. The it's a 40 zone and the lights went amber as I was approaching them. I braked for them, I think I was around 40, and went past one of the cameras at the crossing. It flashed just before I came to a stop, once.

I can't be totally sure of my speed, but I definitely didn't cross the stop line and didn't even reach the end of the marker lines.

I can't be sure if someone in the turn right lane didn't cross the line as traffic started moving fairly quickly and I was very surprised.

If I get a ticket, can I dispute as I came to a stop and I would be shown making no progress across the marker strips?

Is it a red light camera or a speed camera?

If it's a red light camera and you didn't cross the stop line, then no offence appears to have been committed. Any picture will confirm what you say.

If it's a speed camera then the fact only one flash went off would indicate it (probably) wasn't live, if it's a Gatso.

The traffic light cameras by Tolworth are dual Speed and Traffic Light cameras, they may also have them at this location

Looks like they might well be...

Bu$$er! That's the one. I stopped a bit back from the white car. I'm sure I was doing under 40, any more and I wouldn't have been able to stop. Oh, well I almost managed a year with a clean license. I suspect this will be a 3 pointer.

If I get the chance I will go on a SAC.

Surely someone else triggered the flash then?

If you were stopped behind the white car's position you couldn't have been flashed for speeding - you couldn't possibly have stopped in such a short distance if you were over the limit just a few metres prior - and you were obviously behind the stop line so wouldn't have an issue with the red light.

If I've understood the circumstances correctly...

Are you 100% certain it only flashed once?

Yep, that's right. That's what I was thinking, I was aiming to go through, remembered/saw the camera, then the lights, hit the brakes and stopped a good meter before the line (I was on a bike I may add).

I didn't cross the stop lines at all as the lights went amber and I was turning left (right in the photo).

Definitely only once. I wasn't paying attention to the turn right lane, but I was "making progress" the camera.

Our local REDSPEED cameras regularly flash randomly, and sometimes more than just randomly... in Barrow it was like a timing strobe! hehe

They are machines, they are not infallible, no matter what the people running them will tell you, but the secondary check will always clear you if you were not speeding or across the line, so you have nothing to fear.
