An engineer at work changed the registration on his car and forgot to inform Dartford crossing.
He has since received fines for non payment.
A friend of mine claims that these fines are non-enforcable and that he should just bin them.
Is he right?

I suppose if the majority of people ignore the fines and don't pay,you never know they might make it a free crossing.

You have to make a stand to create changes it won't happen without it.

They're actually pretty decent when you speak to them. My brother has forgotten to pay a few times with different cars and they've always dropped the fine

I presume he has pre-paid for the old registration?

He should contact them and explain he HAS paid, and see if they accept this given his new registration will match the unpaid crossings.

My brother had pre paid for a skiing holiday then changed his vehicle.. they changed the details right away when he called them.

He's wrong. They're fully enforceable and backed up by legislation, similar to congestion charges, or council parking tickets.

Best bet is to contact them and hope they'll be reasonable.

^^ totally this.

Burying his head in the sand to ignore it is the last thing he should do as they are enforceable.

He should fess up to his mistake, provide proof of his account with the other car, proof that he sold it and ask them to forgive him.

He has nothing to loose by trying and if he fails... at least he learns for next time.

Thanks for the replies.
He did have a standing order to pay for using the crossing but forgot to transfer it.
Not sure what he's doing about the fines as I won't see him for two weeks.

That only works if you pre-pay. If you have an account the system just debits whenever you cross. Obviously the system must know your registration number.

A by the by - I booked a Ryan Air flight two weeks ago, for myself and a colleague. When I forwarded him the details, he noticed that I had (word blind I presume), put my christian name and his surname.

I did change it within the 24 hr period - however, today I received an email which I took to be the one allowing me to check-in. Low and behold, no name change and the fee for doing so online? £110!

I contact Ryan air via their live chat function and got the name changed within minutes and for free. For once, fantastic customer service. which may, or may not, just go to prove - you can always ask, be honest and you never know.

I'll give you another 'by the by' as I can't sit by and read somebody saying something positive about RyanAir when they are probably the least considerate airline in the free world.
I paid £400 for a Business Plus ticket to Denmark. Supposedly a flexible ticket. The trip was cancelled, to be made later at a date unknown. I went online to check options regarding suspending the ticket and ended up on 'online chat' where I explained the situation, that the trip was postponed, I was not looking for a refund and that holding the credit was fine until I had a new date, at which point I would pay the increase in price if applicable or pay nothing if the ticket was of the same or lower value. Should be simple shouldn't it? Eh no, "What is the new date for your trip, Sir?". We could not get past this, so I suggested to her that I change the dates to several months in the future for a ticket of similar value then when I had a new date I could just make the correct change. "That's not possible Sir." So I ask her what the solution is. "If you don't book a new date before the cut-off for your existing booking you will lose your flight." Back to my original suggestion you might have thought. "That's not possible, Sir". After telling her that expecting me to lose £400 because of their stupidity and inflexibility was ridiculous I hung up on her.
Subsequently I avoided the 'online chat', did a search for a new booking three months away at a similar price, then made the change manually in 'Manage your Booking'.
There are a multitude of other reasons why this airline are crap, although I can appreciate why chavs booking holidays months in advance for peanuts might disagree.

Can it not just be automatically debited from your account like the Congestion Charge? (or are they pulling a Ken Livingstone and relying on the fines for added revenue - even though they had the technology from day one)

A standing order? Can you actually do that?

IMO the system's fine, you just set up an online account, keep a few quid on it and make sure the vehicles you might use are on there.

How hard is that?
