You could always have the best of both worlds - buy the plate as an investment, then simply keep it on retention.blearyeyedboy said:

As long as the MOT is valid, it can be transferred off almost instantly through the DVLA website. It is off right now as I plan to sell the Cayenne, but I could not believe the speed at which the paperwork for the retention was through.
