From what I can tell from the full video (not the edited news highlights) they took his phone and he wanted it back, I don't condone his behaviour but id be pissed off if someone took my phone in that situation, clearly the guys that hit him where trying to obfuscate the situation.

From what I heard they found the registered keeper but he won't give up the driver.

Apparently the pickup wasn't stolen and they have interviewed the RK. Surely if he won't give up the driver he can be prosecuted himself?
It seems to be the case for speeding and this is far worse.
I think there may be something we're not being told

They took his phone to stop him filming them for whatever reason. Not unreasonable, but they didn't realise they were dealing with a knuckle dragger I guess.

Not unreasonable? They crash into him and he uses his phone to video them or get evidence. They then pinch his phone.
On that basis I'm inclined to say they had it coming.

Is there any evidence to indicate that is what happened ?

Seems more likely the lorry driver filmed the pick up driver and he was trying to get the phone to stop it being used against him.

They do follow some H&S rules not because they have to but it makes them look above board to the punters.
