I too believe people are becoming more lazy. Petty crime rates are falling, apparently as a result of young persons living on the sofa with Facebook/Xbox. Obesity & diabetes are at record levels, & there are many more cars around.
Would be interesting to see true statistics, if anybody can be arsed...
https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/514912/road-use-statistics.pdf

"At the individual level, the average distance driven per person has fallen over the last decade or so"

"There are also different trends for different age and gender groups. The distance that women drive is increasing, which in part reflects the increase in the proportion of older women holding driving licences, while the overall reduction in car use is greatest for young men (aged 17-29)"

"Average personal car/van driver distance down 11% since 2002"

"Although the number of cycling trips has remained broadly constant in recent years, the average distance cycled per person has increased (+26% since 1995/97), as has average cycle trip length (+36%)."

Where will it all end: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-38156778

I fear the end of the petrolhead is nigh
Car traffic is up 0.5% since 2007 so maybe not quite yet the apocalypse. Bear in mind the population increase over the same period - use of cars has decreased significantly per head of population.
Says who?

They can fudge figures anyway you want, the roads are more congested you only have to drive to see it.

Its either more cars or road layouts to blame.

I can well believe it. It shows just how much the traffic calming, stupid traffic light phases, moronic traffic lights on roundabouts, 20-limits and taking lanes out to put bus/cycle lanes in has done to improve our lives.

We all spend 50% longer in the car every time we go out. Just pisses me right off.

FIRST.
Without doubt satellite technology will soon track every car on the planet to ensure that whenever you break the speed limit you WILL be caught.
SECOND
Gridlock WILL not happen because one day in order to make a journey you will have to log on to a national computer stating when & where you wish to travel. You will then be advised it there is a suitable slot in the traffic which may not be gridlocked i.e. at a standstill but will be moving at a very slow pace my guess 40mph max. Needless to say you will ay for this privilege.
There may be no alternative train travel as the unions will have collectively brought the entire rail system to a halt in a deliberate attempt to haste the bankruptcy of GB Ltd. In the south this subversive policy has already begun.
If you aged under 50 THIS WILL HAPPEN IN YOUR LIFETIME - ENJOY.

Safe, walled, urban DC - 20mph....

That's not a good example. If you are there, you've just come off the A2 at Deptford Bridge and you'll know that set of lights ALWAYS has pissed people staggering out into the road without looking at all hours of the day. Going faster than 20 is asking for trouble. Secondly, ahead of you is roundabout where you'll have to brake to....around 20mph ...to go round (unless you like bumping across the kerbs and dodging the potholes).

Seriously, take your time. There really is no point in rushing around there. You're only going to arrive at the next set of lights moving faster, have to break harder, and you've used more fuel and expelled more CO2 going faster. Which is kind of the point of the article.

Anyone who has not had the pleasure of driving around Birmingham needs to try it just once to see deliberately caused congestion at it's very best. There are traffic lights on virtually every single roundabout now. These do nothing more than cause chaos. Bus lanes are everywhere of course and there is even one road designated as 2+. A dual carriageway where vehicles with one occupant are obliged to use a single lane.

Speed bumps should be banned countrywide but I'd be amazed if it happens.
