Update update update
Tunnel police just called saying a chap has called them saying he clipped a car and stopped on the flyover waiting but I didnt stop (I stopped at the end of the flyover for 10 minutes)
Now up till him calling the cops he had got away with it so reasons are:
Anyone care to guess how this plays out ? I have to drop in tomorrow to fill out a form.
Interesting question around the definition of "as soon as is reasonably practicable"...Tunnel police just called saying a chap has called them saying he clipped a car and stopped on the flyover waiting but I didnt stop (I stopped at the end of the flyover for 10 minutes)
Now up till him calling the cops he had got away with it so reasons are:
- He had a weekend to sweat on not reporting an incident
- He thinks my rear nearside crabbed into his car and can claim
- He has 9 people with whiplash in his fiesta
- Something I havent thought of.
Anyone care to guess how this plays out ? I have to drop in tomorrow to fill out a form.
I wouldn't have stopped there but it's entirely conceivable that he would, given youth, inexperience, not really knowing what to do etc. Given that he's now approached the Tunnel Police I'd say that it'd be a hard job to do him for failing to report even given the delay.
How would Insurance view the incident anyway? Is it cut & dried enough or would they push for knock-for-knock anyway, still leaving you out of pocket.
<makes mental note to a) get dashcam b) avoid Silver Outbacks around the tunnels>
I did think you were going to say it was the Wallasey tunnel though, the approach to that at rush hour is like the Wild West & I'm surprised there's not more incidents.
BTW, what do the Tunnel Police ACTUALLY do? They have some nice motors and I read an article a while back that a previous 'Chief Constable' (ok, not the right term given their size obviously but you know what I mean) had pushed for them to be given PPE & training for batons, CS etc (which is only fair, they are Police after all & could encounter or be sucked into situations) but other than acting as traffic protection for breakdown recovery and supervising the cash collections from the tolls, what do they actually do?
I'm being curious rather than having a poke - I always wondered - and now I'm tunnelling daily, I wonder even more. And how do the officers see themselves, do many go on to join MerseyPol for example or is it a role that they drift into after retiring from a HO force?

Chaps I have his name and address do I visit or report to insurance ? It's officially with cops now so on a database I assume.
Happy for him to pay and avoid insurance but is that correct.
Sounds like he's trying to set it up to pass the blame on by claiming you didn't stop. You could go round and visit armed with frozen sausages, etc, etc, but if they don't hold their hands up you're looking at 50-50.Happy for him to pay and avoid insurance but is that correct.
I'd contact insurance so they are aware, especially if the other party then attempts to claim off you, but if the estimates posted on here are correct then unfortunately it will probably be cheaper/less hassle in the long run to suck it up and sort yourself

Do I go round ?
You don't know if he's a normal guy, a thug, a chancer, dim, intelligent etc etc. Going round could be twisted against you & paint you as an aggressor. And yet, could also be the most reasonable thing to do.Perhaps rather than knocking, a polite note/letter to his address. "Hi - I'm the guy whose car you hit. Would you prefer to go via insurance or pay for the repairs directly? Please give me a call & let me know. FYI, the quotes I've had so far average out at £123.45"

I am on CCTV as stopped on the main road at the time of the crash and the duration of my stop.
Do I go round ?
Best case scenario = they offer to pay full cost of repairsDo I go round ?
Worst case scenario = they're a 6' 6'' 230lb company director type who doesn't take kindly to being disturbed
or something in between...
In all seriousness, if the actual collision wasn't caught on camera or you have no witnesses then unless they hold their hands up you're going to struggle. By all means go round as you never know, but don't expect too much.
Spoke to a nice chap after calling directory enquiries, he said he didnt see me (silver car / dark night) and hadnt reported it to the insurance. I said I have 2 quotes of £450 and £480 and would accept half of that amount if he wanted to settle and pay for the damage.
He is thinking about it.

Everyone's a nice chap when they get caught. Doesn't excuse the fact he left the scene of an accident and failed to notifyHe is thinking about it.
