Hi All,

I have been saving up for a while and now my kids are older, its time i get back into the work of owning a non crap car, for weekend use

Years ago i was I had some nice cars, but kids came along and that all went down the pan. (I had 2x 300ZXTT's, Porsche 944 & 924's)

For the past 12 months i have spent probably everyday on autotrader and ebay looking at options whilst I was saving up, but now i am in the postition to buy, but cant get my wish list nailed down. I have tried to do research on all the cars i may want but hopefully the knowledge on here can help me more.

So here is the current list with what i see as pros and cons.

Mercedes C55 AMG - Pros - Its a Sleeper of an AMG, and sounds great Cons - Its a C Class
Mercedes CLK55 AMG W209- Pros'I have owned a W208 CLK320 in loved that car, Sound and its a newer version Cons - Prefer the shape of the W208 to the W209 and a W208 would be half the price
Audi S4 4.2 - Pro's Interior, Sound Cons - Issues with Timing Chain Tensioners
Audi RS6 4.2 - Pros - Performance, Looks Sounds, Tunability Cons - Age, Does it have same issues as S4?
Audi S6 5.2 - Pros - Its has a Lamborghini Engine, Sound Cons - Not sure yet
Mercedes E55 AMG Supercharged - Pros Performance, Sound Cons - It has air suspension

Are there any major issues on these i havent noted and what are your views? The car does need 4 seats though

I'm Swaying towards the S6 at the moment

C55 You'll be hard pressed to find one they're rarer than the CLK & pretty much bulletproof

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2016...

CLK55 I've had a few of these & find them a great car again bulletproof (this would be my bias choice)

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2016...

S4 Fast but efficient rather than fun plus the timing chain issues (I'd take the C55 over this)

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2016...

RS6 Properly quick but not without issues Gearbox/Suspension etc (fast but fragile comes to mind)
http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2016...

S6 Great engine but every time you need stuff for it everything will cost

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2016...

E55 Just flat out fast the Suspension is an issue but it's a lot of car for your cash.

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2016...

CLS 55 As Above

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2016...

E500 (5.5 version) 390bhp fast but without the any issues (again rare)

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2016...

CLS500 Same as the above

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2016...

BMW 550i Fast plus it benefits from none of the parts having the M Tax added

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2016...

BMW 650i

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2016...

Jaguar SV8 These are supposed to be good cars

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2016...

BMW M3 CS

RS6 cons are much worse than the S4.
Suspension, gearbox plus little things but get one on coil overs and a re-con box and they're amazing cars.

Thanks for the replies, lots of good info.

The CLK is the only one that has always been on my list, i actually bought the CLK320 to see if i likes CLK's before parting with alot more cash to get a AMG55 Version. Origionally i was planning to get a W208 CLK55 bit as i have been pondering so long i managed to save up more money and thats when the W209 and the S6 came in. As with the C55 its so rare i didnt even know they did it, i though they only did the C32 in that shape and didn't want a V6.

I'm pretty sute it will be either the C55, CLK55 or S6 though the s6 might be a bit big for my garage as my CLK only just squeezes in. I can get the C55 as an estate too so i can debadge and pretend to the wife i bought a practical car lol

From the advice I have deleted the RS6, E55 and S4. I don't want a BMW to be honest as not a big fan of the looks or the 5 or 6 series of this age and i i get a car its has to have the performance badge on it like the M, S, RS or AMG smile

If there's anything you'd like to know about the CLK55 feel free to ask as I've pretty much tried most of the mods people put on them.

The CLK was always my initial choice, just with more money come more options so hence the Audi's.

But, sticking to the CLK I'm swaying more towards the W208 rather than the 209. Strange as it may seem, but the is based on the following

1. I Can get a W208 much cheaper, so can spend rest of money on nice mods (Suspension, Exhaust)
2. The 209 has no more power
3. Insurance & Tax will be leas as i can probally get the 208 on a classic type policy
4. I prefer the look of the 208, though inside i prefer the 209
5. The 209 had a gearbox issue but i don't know if it effected the AMG version

Is there any big reasons for Buying a 209 over a 208 (Apart from the 208 rust, but I haven't seen any rusty AMG's)

1. Yes you can get a 208 cheaper but it's chassis isn't as good.
2. The power is identical but I'd still take the 209
3. Road Tax is the same so it'll depend on insurance
4. That's personal opinion so who am I to say which is the better looking
5. No gearbox issues with the 209 it did have a radiator/cooler issue but most will have been changed by now.

The big reason to go for the 209 is that it's a sweeter steer but if you want a 208 then get one, as a sidebar most of the rust hides behind the bodykit & shows up under the bonnet to.

Having driven both the 208/209 the former feels like it's carrying it's more weight &is in less control of its mass whereas the 209 (whilst not being Caterham like) felt lighter & more controlled, but that's just a personal opinion.

How about a Jaguar XF SV8?
A bit more interesting than the Germans. Sounds evil and goes like a greased weasel. It's got a 4.2 litre supercharged V8 putting out 420bhp as standard and can easily be tuned to 500bhp+
The engines are absolutely bomb proof and reliability is no worse than Mercedes and build quality is better. Lots of gadgets to play with. Nice 6 speed auto with paddle shift and dynamic mode when you want to drive like your arse is on fire.
It's best not to look up fuel consumption.
