In Loughborough a moment ago I was just passed by an unmarked police Volvo of 1997 vintage. R plate. I was not aware that such old vehicles were in use. Does anyone know of older?

Yes, they have historic fleets that get driven on road.

Not on active duty presumably, whereas the Volvo appeared to be working.

How do you know it was a Police car if it was unmarked?

Blue lights in the grille and back windows, siren sounding.

It didn't. Unmarked cars tend not to say Police on them.

The location of the lights suggested that it was an unmarked police car.

Are you thinking something different?

Could be Fire or Ambulance service, certain roles within the Fire Service I know in particular can use their own car.
Don't they usually have a light on a curly cord that they stick on the roof as and when? This one had proper fitted lights.

No, they can use fitted grill lights. Been a few threads on here about it over the years.
This one had them in the grille, and rear windows. It also had a proper siren, which was in use. I stand to be corrected but I've not seen a Trumpton before with the full disco setup.

Vehicles used by all 3 emergency services (fire, police, and ambulance) use unmarked vehicles. revenue and customs (for serious crime)several other "authorised users" of blue lights, but they tend not to use unmarked vehicles.

Then there is the walt, lots around I'm afraid.

I've driven an automatic Avenger as a response car that had a hole in the top off the offside wing. This meant that in the rain water would splash onto the windscreen.

Aged? That one was.

I don't know if it's still the case but high ranking forces officers used to be driven in unmarked cars, e.g. Jaguars, by armed drivers in civvys. The car a mate of mine drove was fitted with blues and wig-wags, maybe a siren too though I didn't hear it.

Just because it was on a R plate doesn't mean the car was 20 years old,an older reg can go on a newer car

is it a stealth tactic, who'd look twice at what looks like a 20 year old car
