.....It amazes me that they can write a contract for parking charge that can be blown away on numerous points, but a two year break clause in a supply contract is seemingly water tight.
On that point I think we can agree 100%.

Interesting this, despite what some people have said I can think of a lot of times where you'd spend more than a couple of hours in one shop. Testing a hifi, picking carpets, kitchens, bathrooms. The list goes on.

It would seem that you have to be very observant now when shopping for something that may take a while!

Not really any different to you turning up at a pay-&-display car park and putting enough money in for 2 hours, you still have to be observant to ensure you don't overstay. Difference in the OP's situation is that it was free for a couple of hours which is offset by the difficulty in extending the duration of the stay.

But that doesn't fit the business model that the parking companies use - they offer to manage the site for free, and can only profit from it if they issue lots of tickets. This is why genuine residents and occupiers get targeted - the original serial abusers do get deterred pretty quickly, and the only way for the scheme to be sustainable for the the PPC is to continue issue tickets to genuine users.

If anyone here is from Scotland or Northern Ireland, can you tell me how you guys ever find a place to park, as the private parking laws do not apply there. It must be carmaggedon there without any option for enforcement.
Spotted a uk plc (?) bloke inspecting and ticketing a car parked in Belfast outside an apartment block in the residents parking on sunday, couple of the local retail centre car parks use them. I assumed the law was the same over here?

UKPC operate over there - The contract laws are indeed the same as in the UK, but crucially POFA 2012, which enables parking companies to hold the keeper liable for unpaid tickets, does not apply. In Scotland and NI, the parking companies can only charge the driver, so they work on the assumption that windscreen tickets are paid, as there is nothing they can do to pursue the keeper.

Without that legislation, it really must be parking chaos over there... I wonder if England could ever cope without it?

Handy to know! Although I've never had a ticket nor any problems getting a parking space.

I'm not from either of the above, but I think some people in England don't realise how small the population figures are.
Not enough in comparison to be a problem except in a handful of places!

In the latter case approximately one third of the total live in just one location: Belfast.
