Company owed money by another company

Thomas Higgins do very well with their letter writing service - but it's not so cheap once you get past that stage & need to deal with it on a detailed basis or indeed, go to litigation.
I suspect the devil will be in the paper trail. Find whatever emails, letters, diary records you can and then speak to a specialist.
FWIW my tame rottweiler is Colin at Matrix Legal, pulled me out of the mire with a large heating outfit that thought invoices were optional... Highly recommended. I know he's moving office this week but I'm sure that wouldn't stop him! If nothing else, he'll give you good, free advice on the phone.

Was the client kept update on the cost involved? Not being funny but if my company was instructed to come in and fix a problem not covered under any maintenance or support contract we would be ensuring the client was kept informed of the ongoing costs and seek additional written authorization for continuing the work.
If your company wasn't doing that and presented the Invoice for that sort to money at the end; the client would have every right to think your company is taking the piss. Other people have explained the court process so I won't get into that but your company will have to present evidence such as well documented timesheets with a detailed breakdown of the work carried out to justify the claim. Saying we worked xxx hours for the client will not be enough.
