Wording on NIP

Just curious about what "Exceed a temporary 50mph speed restriction..." means. It says "M1 Motorway, Roadworks, Jnc 11-12...".

Can I work out from that definitively whether it was in the roadworks 50 limit, or in the 50mph variable speed limit? Both are there between 11 and 12.

There is both the variable speed limit and roadworks in that section. I think it was the gantry at the end of the roadworks and start of the variable limit.

So, when you get to the end of the roadworks and back to the variable speed limit, there is an NSL sign and a "Variable Speed Limit" notification. My next question is what does the NSL sign mean? If you saw the signage in the pic below, does the NSL sign mean the limit is 70 (on the motorway), or does it mean that the limit is whatever the variable speed limit signs above say?

It's clear what is meant, but is it clear and unambiguous technically what is happening?

Then limit is NSL unless the VSL is in action. If the VSL says 60 then it is 60.
