Saw a car today, and I don't know what it was. I noticed it at a distance, then a car pulled in between when I got closer, and it was raining, so I didn't get a clear look at it. I'll try to describe it:

Dark green 2 door saloon, silver letters on black registration plate.
Similar shape to a mk1 Escort, but not as curvy/coke bottle, and maybe a little bit smaller (it looked small and low next to modern cars around it). Probably from a similar time to the Escort or older, so a mid to late 60's car at a guess.
4 round rear lights, with a small rectangular reflector below them, and a silver rectangular badge on the right hand side.
Clamshell bootlid (the shutlines were around the side of the car, like the bonnet on a Fiat 500).

Any ideas?

Sounds like a Reliant Scimitar SE4 (the saloon that preceeded the better known GTE).

I mean "preceded" - can't spell properly after rum and coke - sorry smile

You made a good guess at “mid to late 1960’s” – announced in late ’64 and on sale in ’65.
clap
Essentially it was a replacement for the Reliant Sabre – with a steel box section chassis, fibreglass body and Ford Zephyr straight 6 engine with 3 carbs.
Just over 120 mph top speed but only low 20’s mpg.
A bit old fashioned on the inside but a pretty body and quite nice to drive in a “classic” manner.
My mum had one in the early 1970's and my father and I have owned several of GTEs (various versions).

I fking love it on here sometimes.

A reasonable but fairly vague description of relatively obscure car.

1 answer, absolutely bang on the money.

Superb.
