Traffic fines are a state matter while immigration/borders is a Commonwealth matter. The federal government has zero interest in acting as enforcers for state issued traffic fines.

The chance of you having any problem re-entering Australia is zero. You will also be able to rent a car.

Where you may encounter a problem is if you come to the attention of human police, in which case they might or might not find out about past fines.

At last, someone who knows what they are talking about.

I live in NZ and picked up an Oz speeding ticket some years ago, never paid. Been back since and hired a car from the same company - no issues. As Oz are our closest neighbours co-operation is much higher than between Oz and UK.

And to the person (in a previous case referred to), who thinks speeding fines can be taken from credit card...they can't.

I have quite a few outstanding tickets from NSW and have been there and back more times that I can remember and never had any issues. I got 4 on one day helping someone move house using the Sydney harbour tunnel, 3kms over the limit (I honestly didn't realise) I also got one on the Motorway up to Newcastle for "speeding in adverse weather" 100kph in the rain on an empty motorway at night. To me rain doesn't come to mind when i think of adverse weather.

Personally for the sake of 100 bucks I would pay it if you are planning to move there any time in the future, If you are only planning to visit then I know what I would do. Speed is overly enforced to the point you have zombie drivers either staring at their speedometers constantly or the set cruise control at 10kph below the limit and sit in the outside lane brigade.

I hear VIC is much worse than NSW too...

Just as an aside before anybody says "3km/h, WTF!!!", speed cameras have a leglislated inaccuracy, that is there is leglislation (at least I think it is legislation, it may just be operating procedures but I can't be bothered checking which one) which says if you are detected at XXX km/h then the alleged speed will be YYY km/h, where the difference is from memory 4km/h. Lidars/ground loops are quite accurate, so to be busted for 3 over, you would actually be 7 over..

NSW at least has 3 x warning signs on the approach to fixed cameras. Victoria does suck though.

Was in OZ over xmas and just received a speeding ticket through.

Their motorway's regularly change from 100kph to 110kph and back again. Got a ticket for 110 in a 100, so. basically a £100 fine for doing 6mph over the limit on a 4 lane empty motorway.

What a bunch of thieving wkers!!
G'day. We don't like serial speeders down under in OZ. That's why we come down on 'em like a ton of Fosters and as hard as a kangeroos a**e.

If ya gonna speed all you Pom's stay at home and leave us to drive like a possum's paw, that is nice and gentle like.

Bye for now, Love from Sydney H. Bridge.

I’ve been in Aus for 5+ years and have had 5 tickets in that time. All but 1 of them was cancelled because I’d write to the “civic compliance” (or whatever state office) and explain I was a tourist on a temporary visa (which was true at the time). My letter would ask for assistance in how I should go about submitting my foreign licence for demerit point addition. I’d get a letter back advising they’d cancelled the ticket.

Also, check websites. Some of the states will give you a written warning for the first minor offence, VIC for instance.

Either way, if you’re set on doing something - play it out with a letter first. I hate Aus speed limit enforcement with a passion, it’s just revenue raising given the diabolical standard of driving.

Perhaps the enforcement is due to that stated diabolical driving. Or visitors trying to evade a fine for being caught speeding.

Yeah, that'll be it.
Don't do anything to deal with the real problem, just force everybody to slow down to mitigate the effects.
And make some easy money while imposing the misery on everyone.
It could catch on. Oh , hang on...

Come up the NT you won't be bothered there, even on roads which do have limits.

+1
Was there in the 80's - people driving flat out everywhere. Looked a bit dodgy on the dirt roads!
Is there much enforcement in Western Oz? Much as I liked NT, the 'saltys' & snakes put me off somewhat. Would love to visit/move to Perth one day.....

Australia used to have a fatal crash rate 5 or 10 times what it is now and poor driving to go along with it. This wasn't helped by teenagers going out and buying powerful rear wheel drive Falcons or Commodores in the days before electronic stability gadgets, then driving them into a tree on a bend or oncoming traffic. The OTT speed enforcement probably resulted from this this. OTOH the UK also used to have a much higher fatality rate and speed limit enforcement hasn't really gone the same way, so who knows.

I remember once I was driving around SW Western Australia in the countryside. I drove past a car which had driven into a tree; but I could see the occupants standing around outside unhurt plus some spectators so I didn't stop. There is only one police station per town or per several towns and I knew a car going into a ditch+tree would keep them busy for the next hour. So I dropped the hammer and did a good 50km/h over the limit for a while.... I passed the coppers coming the other way to the crash... they flashed me with their blues but didn't stop me wink

Pay it if you're going back or it will escalate to a 6mph very expensive fine...

Aussie's are bad but are not the worst though, I've been done for 106 and 107 in a 100km/hr zone here in Wellington, NZ.

Only NZ$30 though, no demerits
