Hi Guys,

Some advice please if you would be so kind.

My wee brother recently found the above bike locally to him and bought it. (24k miles, 2005, little bit scruffy) It had no MOT and a flat battery and the seller wanted £500 for it. Its been stored for a year or so. Obviously cheap for a reason. I HPId and all clear. I didn't get to see it before he bought it. He figured he might be able to sort it himself, hindsight is a wonderful thing!

He replaced the plugs and he reckoned it was only firing on one cylinder and now it wont start. I suggested it might be old fuel or the carbs needing a good clean. Now turns out the starter is knackered and a garage had to remove it by destroying it - don't ask. The said garage has now given him a list as long as his arm (fork seals, two tyres, chain and sprocket etc etc) and quoted him about 2k for the work. I told him he should get a written quote for the required work which he doesn't yet have. He is now bricking it and wants to get shot. I suggested he replaces the starter motor so it atleast runs and then he could try listing it for sale.

If he did this what do you think the bike would be worth for someone who could do the work themselves?

Thanks in advance,
cheers Ed

If he's lucky the 500 quid he paid for it. Maybe 300. Thankfully varaderos (varaderi?) Are among the more popular 125s. For a couple of hundred I'd be tempted to buy it myself as a fixer upper.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for your input.

He's in the Scottish Borders. He's just texted me to say that bank of mum and dad has come to the rescue and he's going to get it fixed up and keep it.

I was hoping to take it off his hands but SWMBO killed that idea.....

Thanks again for the advice. cheers Ed

I do hope his parents are not paying £2k to fix it up, even using top quality parts it should cost no more than £300 to replace every single consumable on the bike, bring it to me, I'll do it for £500 smile

Yup. The garage are fking him. Go down there with him and call them out. Written itemised quote to be compared to a similar quote from your nearest Honda main dealer. I'd wager the main dealer will be cheaper!

Look at this on eBay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/272567003197
Seriously, that's the most EXPENSIVE varadero 125 I could find on eBay. He'd be better off seeing for to the broken one and buying another if that's the bill.
