Seeing as trains are quite heavy and the rails are nailed down, what were the other 50%??
Trees mainly would be my guess, plus the occasional overhead wire.
As has been reported elsewhere, it was the wrong sort of leaves - those with the trees still attached...

The other 50% were items on railway property to begin with - trees on railway land, rather than from gardens of neigbouring properties, or roofs from railway buildings not nearby buildings.

Do people not use tie down kits? You can get them for £9.99 at The Entertainer.

Reminds me...

A storm is a great time to steal a trampoline from a garden. They'll assume it blew away but won't go and look in case it killed someone.

Ours went to a load of students on Gumtree for their communal house. I offered it free for collection, and 4 lads turned up after walking 2 miles out from their house. They had planned to carry it back between them but had misjudged the size...

I volunteered to drive them back if they dismantled it, at least that way they would know how it went together, and probably safer than carrying/rolling/walking it back to their digs.

I am extremely relieved mine didn't kill anyone, fortunately my house is surrounded by fields. Even so, it travelled nearly a mile, crossed a single track road, and stopped within 20 feet or so of a busy/fast A road.
Lesson learned, its replacement will be securely anchored...

Our nextdoor neighbour got one of these contraptions.

Rusty, cloth in tatters she has safety in mind when kids are doing a bouncy.

These bloody things are all over the railway on windy days. They cause significant disruption!
I work in the railway control, of the various objects, that ended up causing chaos on Thursday, I reckon a good 50% were items that came from outside the railway. Sheds, roofs, trees, and of course, trampolines
A friend whose house backs onto the East Coast railway line had to dismantle his daughters trampoline quick time on Thursday... Ironically he works on the railways....

OP get a ground anchored! so many people with trampolines are irresponsible and don't know the dangers of them.

There's one about 10ft up in a tree opposite my house at the moment. Has been there since last week! If no one claims it....

Well, it'd been there for 8 years without budging. When was the last time you checked your roof tiles?
