So you use or your skill doing 80mph on a motorway?

If I want to develop and enjoy a drive i come off the motorway and find a a and B roads for a blast.

Motorways are not supposed to be exciting. They are supposed to be safe for higher speed travel in a relatively straight line.

My stretch of the m5 has shed loads of accidents. Tons of middle lane hoggers, elephant racing.

The other morning between 25-22 I was in the 3 rd lane trying to go 70 when twice the traffic stopped completely at almost emergency stop conditions. Lane 2-1 carried on flowing. I got further up and it was two wide load lorries and an escort van hogging 1-2 and people swerving into 3 at the last minute and braking causing the stoppage.

Only a knackered vehicle would have me doing 80, so an increase in the 70 limit will only serve to mitigate my heinous crime. Before these cameras were so widespread I'd cruise at 120 in the 70's, now I tend to begrudgingly sit at 100 to avoid the ban. Some of us have to use these roads because we travel large distances, and picking these 'A and B roads for a blast' you talk about isn't practical. If I drive or ride socially I'll avoid the Motorways and frequently end up going faster off them, which obviously carries a higher risk (although ironically not of being caught).
I drove back from SW France today at between 100 and 136(the vehicle I was in hit the limiter at that) the whole way mostly on the Autoroute. Strangely it didn't feel dangerous or unsafe at all and doing it at 80 would have taken considerably longer and been very tedious. I was very naughty and broke the speed limit here as well. Tut-tut. Maybe after a night's sleep I'll be able to re-calibrate to sub-100 again.

Of course its your choice but if you like to drive at 100-136 I can't see 80mph limit will make much difference to you.

If you travelling large distances it makes sense to stick to a motorway, although at those speeds I struggle to see how you avoid collecting points and bans. When I was 17-25. I used to do much the same but I got banned for 4 months for 122mph and then 5 years later was up for totting up which I managed to get 21 days for. Seemed the system had beaten me and so I have slowed down and grown up.

The other issue is you must absolutely drink fuel. I did 56mpg in a golf gtd london and back. Home to work in sport mode driving like that i did 29mpg!

If you can drive at those speeds consistently and get away with it fair play. If I do drive faster I arrive tired from concentrating and checking for plod.

I wouldn't and on the m5 I drive on often can't due to lane hogs anyway so relaxing as I don't have to be looking for police and slow movers from 1/2 moving in the distance throwing cars into lane 3., so takes alot more effort.

An 80 mph limit wouldn't make much difference to me but I'm not ignorant enough to think it's all about me. Raising the limit to 80mph is more logical and practical than leaving it at 70mph and I'm an altruistic kind of person so I would support that.
It won't happen though as those with the power to do it are too blinkered and mired in politics to seriously consider it.

I used to drive at 56mph in my old VW Beetle.

Modern cars on some stretches of motorway 80mph is nothing special.France 130km on the toll roads. The Netherlands 130km just outside Rotterdam. We know about Germany.

I find on the motorway if it is clear 56mph sends me to sleep. To safe a few pounds on fuel I don't bother.
