Disagree. Most people look at there heater controls when changing them anyway so taking their eyes of the road is no different to now.

Ever used a iPhone for a wee while? You type on that without actually having to look at the letters your pressing despite the fact you cant feel them like a keyboard.

Well as I'm typing on here now on my I phone I'm looking at it I can't type on my phone without looking at what I'm touching
you must be well clever bless you, i bet you can eat your apple, play poker, work and roam bookface all at the same time beer I feel my heater controls in my car no need to look were they are tbh
I think this may be a 'young person' thing...maybe....
I too can type away merrily on my iPhone or iPad without really looking at the keys....older people I know have to keep looking down.
I'm sure it's the case I'm 41 and can't type on anything without having to look
but then I have never worked in an office or in IT so it's not the norm for me
still doesn't excuse using a phone or iPad for that matter whilst your driving

My instrument binnacle protrudes into the swept area of the windscreen. Next people will be saying this is illegal!
Tell me about it. Its one of two reasons why I dont drive a Diablo...

I forget what the mian reason is...
Rear visibility.

But having something protrude 4cm into the swept area doesn't necessarily mean it's blocking your vision in any way.
Exactly. My car will fail its MOT because there is a chip in the windscreen behind the instrument binnacle but still within the sweep of the wipers.

Does 'swept area' mean area actually swept by the wipers, or area designed to be swept?
If the former, solution is shorter wipers. Not a sensible solution, but is it legal? And what if you have fitted longer than OEM wipers?

hopefully the police and motoring orgs will be pushing for the limiting or complete removal of touch screen technology in vehicles , Especially those that control vehicle functions like heater controls,
Amen, 100% agree. This below is the same dash as our 2015 Insignia Elite, and TBH it's a bloody menace! Press the temp button, nothing, press again, it may operate, eyes off the road, what's the fking thing doing! You can change a dial by touch alone, 25 to, cold, 12 medium, 25 past hot. Same with the radio controls, flash over function as far as I'm concerned.

Sarah disagrees, she loves it.

As to sat navs. What a load of nonsense. I have my Tom Tom low as poss in the middle of my windscreen, it's never yet blocked me seeing anything. Where else are you supposed to put it? Or should I do what they used to do, drive down the road turning the pages of an AA road map rested on the steering wheel?

I would imagine (hope) any enforcement action would depend on whether, from your driving position, the item on the windscreen would actually block any view. i.e. tucked in the bottom corner would probably not cause you any grief, but positioned half way up the screen it would.

I guess the law is there to deal with people like this throbber-

Load of bks. Much more dangerous to respond to emails and whatnot if it's down below your eye line. If I take mine off the windscreen and cause an accident whilst I'm posting this, it'll be blood on their hands, not mine.

On a computer so no autocorrect, spelling/grammar arent my strong points. I am however still allowed to text and drive in a few states in the US which feels wierd.

As well as huge sat navs.... what about those that have the screen on 'daylight' mode at night - must be like having a 10,000lumen torch shone at your face!

The only requirement is that you have a full view of the road and traffic ahead, but as usual the police are making up thier own laws.

That second tweet seems to be an extract from the MOT manual, not statute.

Just because you cannot be issued an MOT without obstructions removed from your wind screen while it's inspected, does not mean you can't drive with them put back. As long as they don't prevent you having a full view ahead there is no issue.

Not really relevant to items fixed to the windscreen then...

Pity the police tweet doesn't immediately show the whole of the image, thus:

Then you'd be able to read,

"Vehicles that do not comply with the above could be construed to be in contravention of the legislation."

I'm 6'2". I can stick a satnav in the swept area of my windscreen in a manner where it only obstructs my view of the bonnet and windscreen washer jets.

As a poster said, this is taken from the MOT testing manual. It is not law. It might be tested but from what I know they'd have to prove that your view of the road was obstructed.

...and as such applies only to vehicles which require a MOT i.e. are older than three years. It strikes me as sensible that police are encouraging better placement of satnavs on windscreens but they're misguided in employing a sledgehammer.

Isn't it illegal for the police to tell you something is illegal when it isn't? smile
