My wife takes an interest in family matters type of stuff and she was shocked that being adopted breaks the connection to biological parents.

Works both ways. If her adoptive father had died without a will and his wife had died before him, money would go to his adopted daughter, not to his biological sister or some other bod with shared DNA.
