It does not wind me up, I merely posted about it because it was here.

I simply think anyone that does it is a bit empty

I see the OP never did post a picture of the plate in question. I wonder why that could be?

Who orders plates off the internet when Halfords will do you a pair in 10 minutes???
People who don't live near Halfords. People who don't have the time to travel to Halfords. People who don't trust Halfords to make a set of plates properly. People who don't want Halfords' on their number plate. People who don't want to spend £36 on a pair of number plates.

Interestingly I've just noticed that Halfords' website "Number Plates Builder" uses my number plate font (without permission...), hopefully they don't use it for making the actual plates because they would unlikely to be road-legal...
People who want the minimum sized legal plate for their motorcycles

Mostly lazy people, who don’t need them in 10 mins and like to shop from their armchair, but will you have NO other choice if you actually wanted a misplaced ‘Show Plate’. Because Halfords will only sell you legal ones.

I would have thought that local motorcycle shops would sell correct sized plates.

"Correct", yes.

Minimum legal dimensions, no.

The minimum legal width for the reg. my children bought as a birthday present (after listening to me gripe about the ridiculous size of UK plates smile) is 140mm, a "Halfords" plate would be 230mm, and I couldn't even cut it down because the BS mark would be in the bottom right corner.

Why isn't the "minimum legal" size the same as the "correct" size? Shouldn't they be the same thing?

Suppliers like Halfords use a standard plate size, which, for motorcycles, will accommodate two lines of full width characters with 4 characters on the top line and 3 characters on the bottom line.

That is:
BB99
XXX

My birthday present, bought from the DVLA website, is of the following format:
XIX
991

If my kids were wealthier they could have bought something like
A
8
and I could have had a 66mm wide plate.

If you paid by credit card just get them to do a chargeback.
Would have been by debit card. frown
You may still be able to do a chargeback but you can't do a Section 75 claim - see here:
https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/reclaim/visa-mas...

Just an example of the process:

Well Mr Pointy, I live and learn. Finally got the bank interested in doing a chargeback today, after chasing JDM Plates again yesterday. Their cracker of an excuse yesterday is that they cannot find the order number that their website produced on ordering away back in July. Even though I have a screen shot of the confirmation page! Now they say the order number their website produced does not exist. Anyway, the evidence is hard and fast on both the screen shot and the bank statement, so even JDM Plates said to contact the bank for a chargeback. What an outfit - 6 months an and still wrangling. Even though the nearest Halfords is 130 miles and ferry trip away, it would still have been quicker making a 260 mile round trip to get them! Fortunately, the local motor factors can do them as well.

Lesson learned - Avoid JDM Plates, and worse than them Plates4Cars who attempted to do this before JDM Plates got the chance. At least P4C delivered 2 bits of useless plastic, that bore little resemblance to what their Plate Designer and delivery note said they were..... Oh well, 2 bits of "wall art" for the garage....

If they are selling number plates they should just be able to look up your order in their DVLA-required records, which will have the VRM, your name and address, the V5C number etc...

Nah, they were hopeless in that respect as well. After ordering the plates, I first sent them the docs electronically, which they say they never received. So I copied them and sent them paper mail, which they also say they never received, so for a 3rd time, I sent them again electronically, whilst on the line and they say they didn't come through. So I gave up on them at that point, of ever managing to manufacture plates. Now its just a case of trying to extricate my money back from their sticky paws. There have been some strange excuses. One was "The email comes onto someone else's PC who is not here, and I don't have the password" being one I heard several times.....

I ended up going to the local Motor Factors and got them to make up plates at a fraction (<25%) of the cost, all legal and BS marked.
As I mentioned over 3 years ago. smile

Indeed right, Red Devil.....

But slowly getting somewhere with JDM Plates after nearly 10 months. They are now in receipt of a recorded delivery letter containing the evidence that they took the order (and issued an order number / confirmation) and took the payment from the bank. That coupled with a threat of legal action and they tell me today that they will be processing a refund.

Such a painfully slow process, but lesson learned. Steer clear of JDM Plates.

As for Plates for Cars - Well, the advice is the same, though at least they sent plates. They just couldn't make the 2 with the same sized lettering, even though their delivery note and their 'Plate designer' webpage showed they would be. Oh well, they have found a use as expensive tablemats to set things on.

Local wins every time.
