On roads with pedestrians in close proximity I tend to drive at an appropriate speed based on the risk that I perceive. Usually this is at or below the speed limit.

Where pedestrains aren't around, I don't go faster than 35, mainly because of the fear of getting points, even though 40 or sometimes 45 may feel to be the 'optimum' speed.

Yet in all cases, I often seem to get tailgated with with people driving close enough to suggest that I am going too slowly, yet unwilling to overtake.

DO I drive too slowly?

Too slowly for what?

You should drive at whatever speed you feel comfortable and in control whilst able to stop in the distance you can see ahead of you. If you feel you are holding people up (who may have a different perception of "safety" than you have), then pull over at the next opportunity to let them past. Be sure to give them a thumbsup as they blat past

Same here.

No wonder so many people have speeding convictions these days.

Worst ones are 40mph blanket drivers, up your bumper in the 30, then left miles behind at the national limit.

Inappropriate speed in both cases for the conditions, and worse than all, no appreciation for their lisence.

Why speed where it is generally accepted is the worst place to speed, then go too slow where you can legally go quicker?

Probably not, it sounds quite reasonable to me.

Incidentally, could I ask generally, what do you think about the differing degrees of hazard presented by pedestrians?

For example, you're driving through a village and there are a few pedestrians around, so let us consider some typical scenarios:

1. You approach an adult walking by him/herself at a steady pace on the pavement.
2. Further on is an elderly person with their back to you, walking unsteadily and near to the edge of the pavement.
3. Further on again there is a young child, hopping and skipping along the pavement, and on the opposite pavement one or two other youngsters.
4. Further on again there are two or three young children on the pavement, running about, a bit of chasing/pushing and shoving, general horseplay etc.

Are these hazards all the same in severity and degree of risk involved? Just thoughts. HTH.

Best wishes all,
Dave.
