Does anyone know what's going on with all the cameras appearing on the M20 recently?

On the way to work this morning, there are three strange new gantries in the central reservation between junctions 4 and 2 (or 2 and 4 if you're going coastbound!).

They're painted dark blue and, at first glance, look like the ornate lampposts you'd find in any pedestrianised surburban town centre - but each gantry has two lots of wiring coming out of the horizontal arm suspended over the motorway carriages.

Also, there have been a huge number (maybe 30+) small white cameras installed mainly on the London-bound carriageway between junctions 4 and 2 (although there are a couple on the coastbound side too). They appear like regular CCTV cameras mounted on very tall thin poles alongside the hard shoulder and there are also a couple looking straight down at the carriageway on the overhead gantry where the M20 splits off to the M26.

I've phoned the Kent Highway's Agency who say they have nothing to do with cameras and gave me the number of another agency called "Interoute" who apparently deal with all camera installations.

The person I spoke to at Interoute is checking into it and will be calling me back, but I just wondered whether anyone here knew anything about it?

That's the gantries that have gone in....so now we know.

B*ggers!!!

The speed camera signs on that section of motorway have been in place now for 18 months or more with only the occasional mobile patrol - I wonder how many people are going to get a nasty shock once those b*st*rd Specs are operational?

What a complete and utter liberty! On a ing motorway!

I'm quite annoyed.

hmm, yes I read the Kent/Medway safety camera partnership website after I'd had a rant!

Fingers crossed they are only temporary then!

At least it's a 50 limit.

Specs cameras have appeared in the M1 roadworks around J21 as well.... I would hope they are just for the duration of the works, but it seems a fair expense to put them in as a temporary measure.

At least the signs approaching the roadworks have the Speed Camera symbol, and the words "Average Speed Check" underneath.

Gotta be grateful for small mercies I guess....

Its the M26 thats in need of road works, not that part of the M20. See they're spending our taxes well again.

I don't believe they're allowed to put up static cameras on bits of motorway that don't have a reduced speed limit, and that's more than just the regular guidelines they're free to ignore if it suits them.

Certainly round here (North West) they stick up SPECS for the duration of roadworks and then they disappear again afterwards... so far at least.

Still dont believe these SPECS cameras are working.

Today on the way to work couldnt join the M20 at Junction 2, had to travel the A20 until Swanley (What happened to advance notice about closure of the slip road?)

And coming home (J1 to J2) lanes 2 and 3 are closed off. and you use Hard shoulder and lane 1. although there are 2 SEPCS on each side of the central support: the 2 coastbound point in opposite directions to each other, and likewise the 2 SPECS northbound.

Doesnt make any sense

Dont know what happens after Junction 2 (to junction 3).

I just went down that way last Thursday night, returned yesterday when it was light to see the ba!!!rd yellow things in teh 50 zone... Yesterday was ok as I spotted them, but Thursday night the road was empty, no cars and no roadworks were active... I wasn't doing 50, or anywhere near it
I await with joy my first criminal punishment...

Look for a red Alfa 147, about to smash the existing record

Hmm well I think that I may have driven past them last week on my way to Dover for a booze cruise.

Am usually pretty good at spotting these things but really dont remember seeing any specs cameras and when I came back it was dark.

I used to look forward to getting post in the mornings, but the next week or two I will be dredding any letters...

Would this be a 38 tonne articulated Alfa 147 then?
