Police in Nottinghamshire are being given green ribbons to show solidarity with the Muslim community after a rise in racist attacks.
The "Good Faith" ribbon is being backed by chief constable Steve Green.
Racially motivated attacks in the county have doubled since the attacks on the 7 July, according to figures from Victim Support.
Twenty thousand of the ribbons have been made to symbolise belief in Muslims as a people of peace.
Many people feel fully supportive of the Muslim communities but have no way of showing it
Chief constable Steve Green
Mr Green said: "We have a huge number of Muslim citizens in Nottinghamshire who are just going around trying to do their everyday business.
"But they feel intimidated and sometimes ostracised by racist incidents and by the perception that the white community suspects everybody with a brown face of being a suicide bomber.
"Many people feel fully supportive of the Muslim communities but have no way of showing it and this is a way of allowing them to do that."
He added: "Officers will not be compelled to wear these but I have written to my force urging them to take part."
Official review
But Mansfield MP Alan Meale branded the ribbons "unnecessary".
He added: "I know a lot of officers in the Notts force and they're already extremely sympathetic to the feelings of the ethnic minorities."
Issan Ghazni, of the Nottingham Muslim Action Group, welcomed the move: "It will help particularly in areas such as Hyson Green, Forest Fields and Sneinton.
"People need to know that if they are coming under any sort of racial attack the police will protect them," he said.
The ribbon campaign is also open to the public and they will be available from police stations, council buildings and some shops.
Mr Green's force has been under review by the Home Office after he told a newspaper he may have to "farm out" murder inquiries because of the workload on his officers [/quote]

So Chief Constable Green is of the opinion that the white populace has a perception that all brown faces are a potential terrorist.
Erm, isnt that somewhat of a racist slur against the indegenious population. Silly me though, I forget that like osmosis, racism only travels in 1 direction.
As for the "recommendation" only that Officers should wear these ribbons, can well imagine that a refusal on moral grounds would result in a sudden demotion to the paper clip ordering department.
Frankly its ridiculous PC orientated ideas like this that cause such disharmony in Society in the first instance, not to mention that moral in the force as a result of such dictats must surely suffer.

It's absolutely pitiful.
I despair - and cannot comprehend - how someone so *stupid* could rise to the top of the force.
I agree totally with the comment about the assumption that if you aren't visibly doing something, then you somehow don't care ; and I think the need to be "seen to be doing something" is what's wrong with too much of this country.
For f**k's sake. The Moslem community does not give a s**t whether Police Officers wear bands or not. They want the Police to actually try to do something about it.
What it will do I would think is cause most of the population to think that the CC is a complete tosspot.

Are they going to wear purple for the White Middle Classes as well?
purple ribbons to show cops care about the middle classes
pink to show they care about gays
white to show they care about the poor
yellow to show they care about hostages
green to show they care about muslims
black to show they care about goths
orange to show they care about buddhists
grey to show they care about boring people
brown to show they care about suntanned people
red to show they care about american indians
and a ribbon in the shape of a £ sign to show they care about speeding motorists, of course
As for Mr Ghazni of the Nottingham Muslim Action Group (there to represent all sections of the "Community" no doubt) & his assertion that "people need to know that if they are coming under any sort of racial attack the Police will protect them".
Whilst in principle I agree with such an argument, the wearing of the green ribbon is clearly aimed at the Muslim community & thus clearly doesnt indicate to any other race, be it Indian, Chinease or White, that the Police will "protect them". Double standards anyone ?
Oh & by the way, when did being a Muslim mean that you were in some way part of a different Ethnic group ? Be a Pakistani, yes. Be a Bangladeshi, yes. Be British, well not quite, but be a Muslim & in the Chief Constables eyes, your a completely different race.
& no wonder this Force has to request assistance from other Constabularies to investigate the burgeoning murder rate when a clown like this is in charge !!

absolute bollocks, I live in forest fields (which is right next to hyson green) and 85% of my neighbours are non white muslims...I bet if I told them about this they would deride it as much as we are.
I have my ear pretty close to the ground in this area and in others like it around nottingham and I have not heard of or seen any hate crimes ever. and besides, they like to keep justice internal do the people in my area, if you know what I mean the perps would be discovered and lynched by an army of angry locals because my local mosque is also my martial arts centre, and the imams family run the corner shop which is never shut just up the road. so simply from a logical point of view any crimes against muslim interests would be frowned upon because apart from services that appeal to me they offer lots of other things for the community...and the army out to wreak revenge would surely be of every faith and some with none at all (like me and that would be a sight to make the guardian eat it's hat
I wonder if the increase in hate crimes cannot at least partially be explained by the fact that the BiB are on alert for them, and possibly more inclined to classify (especially white on black/brown crime) as such.
Whatever, I think wearing armbands is silly.
However it will promote racial equality, as all races will find it equally stupid and patronising.

RIBBONS TO SHOW MUSLIM SUPPORT
KEVIN PEACHEY
12 August 2005
Green ribbons will allow Notts people to show solidarity with Muslim neighbours.
The campaign has been launched by police after a rise in race crimes in the wake of the London bombings.
Notts Chief Constable Steve Green wants the ribbons to be worn to show that communities are standing shoulder to shoulder against racism.
He said: "People have asked me how they can show their support for Muslims; how they can demonstrate that not everyone is prejudiced or bigoted.
"To help people show their support for Muslims in a tangible way, I am launching the Good Faith Ribbon Campaign.
"This is a green ribbon which can be worn as a visible sign of support at this difficult time. It expresses faith in Muslims as people of peace. It is a sign of drawing together in good faith, instead of moving apart."
From next week, around 20,000 green ribbons will be available to collect for free from various community centres, shops and other public areas in Notts.
Afzal Sadiq, chief executive officer for the Nottingham and Notts Racial Equality Council, said the show of support would be welcomed among Muslims.
"The elderly and women who wear traditional dress feel more vulnerable," he said. "Because of what happened on July 7 and 21, they have changed their day to day lives."
He said many would not go to the shops unaccompanied, or let their daughters walk alone.
"They feel they are being blamed for what happened.
"We need to show solidarity to say the vast majority of Notts ethnic communities are law-abiding citizens who have contributed to life in Notts. They cannot be made responsible for the actions of a few."
He said members of the Muslim community would also wear the ribbons - but not because they feel they have to justify their faith and lifestyle.
Hate crimes have reportedly risen by around 50% since the bombings, according to police.
But Mr Sadiq said there was also a danger of anecdotal evidence being exaggerated by scaremongers.
Najeeb Nazir, manager of the Pakistan Community Centre in Woodborough Road, St Ann's, said he hoped the ribbons would inspire people to ask questions about the Muslim faith.
"This is an ideal opportunity for education. Islam is a peaceful religion," he said.
His eight-year-old son, Raheem Nazir, a pupil at Fernwood Junior School, said he would be wearing a green ribbon.
Although similar in style, the ribbons will not be fund-raisers as seen with campaigns to raise awareness of issues such as domestic violence and breast cancer.
Mr Green said the idea, which was inspired by meetings between senior officers and representatives of the ethnic minorities, should not be taken in isolation.
"I do not do tokenism. This is one of a number of things to reassure and support the Muslim community," he said.
He added that he would be encouraging, not compelling, his officers to wear the ribbons.
In a month's time, Mr Green promised that he would be taking stock of how this, and other community policing, had succeeded in tackling hate crime and also how comfortable victims were in reporting it.

I heard the armbands have already been ordered, at a cost to the taxpayer of £20,000.
That's the price of a GATSO camera, installed.
Geez ..... what a waste of £20k.
Are there that many BiB in Nottingham ...... ?
Or is this the usual public sector purchasing (they've paid £20 each for them) !

The Criminals will love it. The poor BiB will not be able to chase them and catch them because of the enormous weight of wristbands, badges etc.
