This original image may be freely distributed and used for any purpose including profit. It's available in 5 resolutions from http://www.safespeed.org.uk/sinking.html

It was released yesterday and it's going down well. However there are indications that many don't appreciate the amazing power of such negative imagery. I'm hoping that pretty soon people won't be able to pass a speed camera warning sign without thinking of a sinking ship. Think about it and distribute it widely.

You can also have fun with captions. Some are already displayed on the web page mentioned and captions can be submitted via the following link:

Kevin: "er, excuse me boss, but..."

With apologies to the characters concerned...

Oh, sad day. Wildy, you have let me down so badly ... there is no such named lake.

Old trick question:

"How many lakes are there in the Lake District?"

Answer: ONE ... Bassenthwaite Lake ... all the others are "meres" or "waters"

Liebchen!
They always called it Lake Windermere in a text book at school...it was an American textbook they used to teach us English. Ist no wonder I grew up unable to spell - Yorkshire Mama...American textbooks und language lab drills und a teacher who could not control me..

But locals here refer to Water usually. Ist "ist tha goint (glottal) watter?" of something which sound like that ... und also they say "lake" und dipthiongies the "a" in "lake". So - ist fun communicating for me here.

My wife ..

Speaking of Safespeed - may I take this moment to remind you that the guy contributes a heck of a lot to road safety issues in real terms and is worthy of our support and admiration for sheer courage in standing up to these people - again and again. If he gets floored - picks himself up and goes back into battle again

Every penny to his cause and funding of his site and campaign will help the fight back against the pratmerchants.

Let's make that sinking ship really sink!

After all - we have posters on that site who now post that they are more speed limit compliant and aware and think a lot more about safe driving than they did before - including a cyclist who decided to do an IAM and valued our tips on there.

I think worthy of support - does not matter how small a donation - every little will help fund the fight.

Thanks Mad... (do you mind if I call you 'Mad'? )

Mad Moggie has been reading about an urgent and serious Safe Speed funding crisis in the Safe Speed member's forum. I'm working on a statement and an appeal for assistance.

I really need to raise some fairly serious money.

While I'm still working on the statement and appeal, you could visit: www.safespeed.org.uk/join.html

Many of you have been generous and helpful in the past, and I thank you most sincerely for that.

Pity SafeSpeed isn't a registered charity ... then some of Paul's funding would come from the government (in the form of tax relief on donations)! - Streaky

Yeah. In time it will be, but there's quite a bit of overhead in setting up and operating a registered charity. So it's chicken and egg - we need funding to set up a registered charity to get funding...

In meantime - perhaps we could all chip in mit donation - perhaps we could all spare a small direct debit per month - just to keep a cash flow?

Ist after all fighting for our benefit. Und worth the help.. Ist way to get the funding to get the charity status - vielleicht?

Perhaps I should put in General Gassing or P&P to draw wider PH collective?

Please do. There's now a funding crisis appeal. See page: www.safespeed.org.uk/appeal.html

Can this thread not get moved to the top with a sticky? It would also make sense to change the thread title to draw more attention.... just a thought for any moderators out there.

(BTW PayPal donation just sent)

A very important issue that IMHO all motorists and enthusiasts such as PHers should consider donating towards.

Good luck Paul. Hope you're given the opportunity to keep up the good work.

Paul - how about also encouraging people to add your web-link as part of their e-mail signature - I do.

I am not sure about sinking ship, but sinking standards is certainly what scameras are all about.

As a long term advocate of safe driving and 15 year member of the IAM, I can say that brushes with scameras and fear of them has incensed me so much I am knowingly driving less well when within the limit than I used to. Some way of saying up yours I think or maybe keeping my mind busy - I don't know really. At the age of 40 I should know better and I am not proud of it, but that's how it makes me feel. And I have actually yet to receive any ticket from anyone in the last 12 years and have only received 1 in 23 years driving and the only collision I have ever had I was driving at less than 5mph!

Hi Everyone,

The response to the appeal has been amazing. We're nearly at the half way mark with £9,500 raised since Sunday.

Let's try to get to the magic £10,000 by midnight! £500 pounds in 4 hours.

There's a campaign banner:

Feel free to use it anywhere.

The second £10,000 is going to be harder. Please spread the word and let's get it raised as fast as possible.

And thanks a million to all those generous people who have shown valuable support.
