Whilst out driving last night, we were negotiating a roundabout, and i was on my phone at the time.
Sods law!!! a cop car joined the roundabout from the next exit, My wife Diane said...he is flashing his lights, so i think we should pull over don't you?
So we did, We just sat in the car and waited for him to come to us.
I knew why he had stopped us...Yes it was the using of the Phone whilst driving.
He appeared at my window, and you should have seen his face, when he realised that we were driving my wifes left hand drive Smart car,and i was the passenger,
He exclaimed a big Aghhhhhhhhhh, when he saw the error of his ways, and laughed his head off, and so did we.
But the Barsteward had to have the last word...Get that brake light fixed asap
Don't ya just love it when you get one up on em, coz this Braintree copper looked about 14 years old, smarmy little S:censored:it!!!!! made our day:hehe:

Sounds to me like he did his job. OK you weren't driving whilst on the phone but he was right to stop you and check - and you should get your brake light fixed.

Prof Beard - Oh my god, I'm defending the Police - please don't tell anyone

Same happended to me a few years ago when I was being driven by my wife in her Fiat Barchetta. I got out, he smelt the booze. I said, "I'm in the job myself, I usually breathalyse the driver!"

Priceless!

Actually no, I don't feel the need to "get one up" on someone who is doing his job. That is a really pi$$ poor attitude you have there.

I think we need more legislation here. If only someone could develop an attitudometer so we could tell who thinks stopping someone for using a phone is admirable and a job well done. Then we could steralize them so they don't reproduce any more and eventually we would end up with a really tollerant society which does not seek to persecute people for really nasty crimes like being on the phone.

Like the above has said, as a fair percentage of the police I have dealt with, have a very bad attitude, why should you not get one over on them? The police are there to serve and protect you and me, not be arseholes.

If anyone else in the public services industry acted to their customers like some policemen do, they would not be in a job.

Sorry if my pi$$ poor attitude upsets you mate, but around here they should spend more time around the town, sorting out those little sits that prey on old age pensioners.

Like it or not using a hands-on mobile whilst driving IS illegal - we employ the Bib to uphold the law - if you don't like a law, whining about the Bib is NOT the way to change it.

What you say above really does make you sound a bit of a pr*t. I suspect you have no idea what tollerance IS.

Having said that, is driving around one-handed whilst holding a conversation REALLY that sensible.

Did he issue you with a producer for fixing the brake light? If not, then I think you can consider yourself let off and off you go. Nice of him to tell you the light was out. Honour even all round, and well done for him for laughing about it.

Well told story, btw.

I attended a RTC this very afternoon involving a 4 year old who was run down by a driver in a 30 limit who was on his mobile and not hands free - no indication of excess speed or similar, I hasten to add. Whilst not adopting a holier than thou attidute, who says if he had been concentrating on the road and not ordering paint and wallpaper for his house or whatever, then he would have seen what was about to happen and stop safely?

The kid seems OK with a minor head injury and no serious consequenses anticipated, but what if.....

'Attitudometer' - Great invention. I use mine regularly on those who engage mouth before brain when they are stopped and end up talking themselves into a booking....

And I am not seedless, by the way......

Nothing more dramatic than the kid running from the offside of the driver (whole offside lane in a 2 way undivided road) to see kid approach. Did so at the VERY last minute, and swerved. Perhaps, as he held 'phone in right hand to right ear with elbow resting on window, he neglected to see the child? Either way, child seems OK.

Seems that he had a good case since you appear to have been 'in charge' of the vehicle.

I agree that policing priorities do seem to be somewhat screwed up in many areas, but it's not the coppers that you and I see that make those decisions.

To be honest, I dont use the phone in the car when I am driving, dont see the need to get distracted and risk a crash. Had a phone call a long while back, sister was in the car and mentioned something about the car in front that did not notice braking or words to that effect

Phone now used handsfree when car stopped to avoid headaches from using phone, people want to contact me, they use voicemail

So did you prosecute the childs parents?

Criminal negligence is major cause of children getting killed in the road. Four year olds are not responsible for their actions. Was the car damaged and are the parents insured? Oh no they wont be will they because you can't insure yourself for criminal negligence. Its an interesting question about whether the poor driver would have hit the kiddie if he had not been on the phone. The more intersting question is "should we allow a level ammount of negligence from both motorist and parent"? Should we demand the very highest standards of driving and make the penalties for non compliance ruthlessly punative, while allowing a total laise faire aproach for pedestrians? Should we pollute out streets with ludicrous road humps because a few stolen cars get driven furiously? Instead of notifying motorist when they are entering an area of concentrated parental negligence with a roadsign, should we post guilt inducing notices of accident and caualty numbers in those areas?
