12 Points - Automatic Ban?

I got 6 bringing me to 12, was expecting a ban. Went to court with AGT law and got off with a fine. They never actually added the 6 points and my other six expired a week after my court date so my licence has been clear ever since. Been about six years now.

Step daughter got 6 points (taking her to 12 in total) for using her hand held mobile while sitting in traffic, outside a Police Station, 'Bluetooth connection dropped out so I HAD to pick the phone up', yes of course you did, you muppet!

Anyway she took legal advice and put together her mitigating argument, which was essentially she had to keep her licence to be able to drop off and pick up her boyfriend's son from school, his education would suffer greatly if she lost her licence. She got away with just a fine, 6 points and kept her licence.

My advice to you is get proper legal advice and also the obligatory pay more attention and don't get caught over and over again.

Being empty dual carriageway didn’t think I wasn’t speeding as I wasn’t particularly looking at speedo, just driving at what I thought was a normal feeling speed for the conditions. Dry summers day, empty road.

I once got to 9 points. All gained when driving for work, none in my sports cars which I tend to drive quite fast.

I won't tell you what speeds that I was driving at yesterday.

But yes if you are lacking in observational skills and keep getting 'caught' this says to me you routinely drove over the limit and don't see hazards or signs.

If that makes me a brakist crack on.

I couldn’t agree more regarding legal representation. I was on 9 points for a long time and then got pulled just after Christmas 1998 for doing 90ish just past Scratchwood services. The summons didn’t arrive until the following May (I thought maybe the Police Man knowing my situation had binned it afterwards) for a court appearance in June.

I represented myself, the magistrate didn’t accept my genuine mitigation that I was a Quantity Surveyor and had to visit construction sites that were often remote. I got a 6 month ban. I think with Legal Representation I would have got less.

My Employer was great often utilising trainee’s and other people to drive me about.

Just to help my mobility issues 2 weeks later after the ban I fell over (yes I had been drinking) and broke my ankle.

I have pleaded 'exceptional hardship' twice whilst working as a lorry driver, 40mph limit where everyone else is national speed limit, but as mentioned it MUST be hardship caused to others...just losing licence and employment will not work.

So,
You are the only driver of the church minibus
Only driver of the Scout Group minibus
Your wife's 90 yo parents rely on you for shopping as they live 5 miles from the nearest shop and are no longer able to drive
Your wife has multiple cancers and needs you to ferry her to hospital appointments
Your kids attend a school for 'special needs' and you live out of range for LA transport

So get creative, the mags do not check on your tale of woe!

But expect a significant fine, and remember that insurers can now access your driving record.

Ah yes the famous 20 mph dual carriageway between Wimbledon Chase and Raynes Park. That was a 40 before the politburo at the People's Democratic Republic of Merton poked their oar in. If there's a more ridiculous use of the 20 mph limit on a road then I haven't seen it.

Surely every person who has pleaded not guilty but is found guilty has lied in court (or at least a very high percentage of them). But I get your point.

I don’t stick to the speed limit and it’s rare I’m overtaken on the motorway outside controlled speed zones and average speed cameras. Frankly points are a tax on the terminally inattentive and it beggars belief people manage to rack up points given number of apps like Waze being available.

I did get five points about 15 years ago for 100.22 on A30 and haven’t really slowed down since so can’t believe how unlucky some folk are. Clearly politically motivated my arse as Jim would say.

I'm kind of with you on the "sneaky limit changes", however the rest of it....meh.

I've been driving for 30+ years. There have been times when I've exceeded the limit (always due to incompetence or poor planning) I've managed not to get any points.

the thing is - the more often you break the speed limit, the more likely you are to get caught. It's the law of probabilities.

Forgive me if I sound like I’m jumping on the bandwagon and I partly know the answer to this being a guy with an addictive personality who gambled with my life but there was a point where I was told I either pack it in or it’s curtains.

Granted we’re not talking about a human life but your livelihood at risk, is it lapses in concentration or just the going fast part.

I am a hypocrite, never banned but do have points for speeding. I never saw a van til too late but my license was clean.

Same here. I drive like most people, which includes going above the limit at times.

I had to do an awareness course about 6 years ago after a camera got me, and prior to that my last points were about 30 yeas ago.

To get 12 you're either very unlucky or really pushing it. If I had 9 points and another 3 would lose me my job I would be sticking to the limit!

My cousin got 12 points and kept his licence.

Prior to this, I had got two tickets in two days, which added to my existing 3 points put me on 9. He took the piss, naturally.

Then he got 9 points in a day. He had a company car scheme where he would get a brand new high spec Mondeo, and would have it for 3 months. I understand the lease company buy them in high volumes, and negotiate a huge discount, they farm them out as lease cars, and then sell them via car supermarkets as low mileage nearly new vehicles. Because of the frequent changes, and poor record keeping, the office could not identify the driver immediately, and all three tickets from three separate occasions with the same camera, dropped on his desk on the same day.

Rather than do what i did and drive like I had my granny in the car, he carried on as he was, and got caught again by a mobile camera near his office.

He was quite a senior manager, so his HR director wrote a letter saying he could not continue working without a car, and it would take a long time to train a replacement. He said this could cause hardship for the business, and could negatively affect other employees. He was also going through a difficult divorce, so that was added to the sob story.

He managed to keep his licence. His employer had ended the company car scheme and put most people on a car allowance. It cost him an absolute fortune to insure a 1.4 Ford Focus with three SP50s and an SP30.

I think a lot of it is down to luck along with the amount of miles you travel in a year. I love the 5000 mile a year crew jumping on their high horses at someone who drives 10 times that in a year. Yes the probability of being caught is 10 times higher!

All the speeding offences I've been done for in previous years have been quite pathetic (35 in a 30, 36 in a 30, 80 on a clear dual carriageway, etc.) Following the flow of traffic and paying more attention to road hazards instead of my speedometer has always been my downfall.
