I apologise if I have done the 'smart arse' reply. Guilty.

But, please forgive me, instead of peering into lay-bys and forgetting to check bridges and overpasses, why not just drive at the speed limit? Then you wouldn't have to worry who is, or isn't, on the bridge?
Honest answer?

I was running a space-saver & thought I was doing around 54/55 mph (I know the limit for these is 50 before anyone states the obvious).

I hadn't set the cruise control which I normally do because I joined the road halfway down & as it was only 2 miles I didn't think I'd need it.

Also there was a lot of traffic so fiddling about with the switch would have been a distraction.

I did actually 'change my behaviour' after the 6 points.

The third catch was on a road I had not driven on for 5 years - I didn't know that the limit had gone from 40 to 30.

No visible speed signs, I saw the camera van & assumed I was ok because of what I though was a 40 limit.

I found out my error a few days later.

The fourth was on dual carriageway. The camera van is usually parked in a lay-by.

This time the camera was on a bridge 35/40 foot above the road.

I had no idea he was there until I went under the bridge - the NIP arrived a few days later.

And for those who say I should have been aware, had more spacial awareness etc etc that's ok on a quietish road.

On a fast flowing dual carriageway you have too concentrate on the road & whilst you also have too be aware of your surroundings you can't take your eyes off the road all the time.

Never in 20 years of using that stretch of road at least twice each day have I seen a camera on the bridge.

Was I careless? Maybe however if I had shunted my car & used the excuse 'I was looking for a speed camera on a bridge' I would have been done for driving without due care or dangerous driving.

Can't win can I?

And no I'm not after the sympathy vote.

st happens. I got caught & now have too face the consequences.
Careless? No, but perhaps you need to work on your observation.

40 mph requires repeaters, so you missed the fact that there were none.

Not seeing a van on a bridge until you are going under it?

They all, always see you before you see them.

Unless when you are driving along you are looking at bridges/laybys etc rather than the road & just happen to be looking there as you round the bend etc.
I don't know about you but when I am driving I do look at laybys, as a vehicle may be about to leave and in my overall observations I may see a vehicle parked on a bridge. What are you concentrating on?
Everybody does, but my point is that you are never going to see them first unless you are looking where you wouldn't be immediately your field of view changes, and even then in the milli-second that you see them it is already too late.

I had no reason too think that the limit had been reduced from 40 to 30.

Not having used the road for 5 years I wouldn't have been aware beforehand.

I don't Google the speed limit of every road I use.

Do you?

As for the van - there was no van. Just a lone figure on a bridge wearing a dark coat on a dull November day.

Like I said I was in a line of traffic which is why I didn't see a lone figure 40 foot above a very busy dual-carriageway.

Make your mind up, first of all you don't look at lay-by,s etc then you say everybody does. I would suggest if you are on a straight road you may stand a chance just by observing the road. It would only be when you are reasonably close you would have to actually need to "look" at a lay-by and by then I agree it is too late.

I default to 30 if I'm unsure, flick cruise and sit there and sod anyone else.

The reality is, if it isn't 30 it'll tell you soon enough and you can speed up.

Yes I'm that paranoid!

Actually you did, there were no 40 repeaters.

As I said, not careless, partly unlucky but could have been avoided.

BTW, no, I do not google speed limits, I observe them. As a result I have had zero points in 47 years and 650k plus miles.

As is recommended.
If there is a change of road, and you have not seen the speed limit confirmed by a sign, then default
to 30 until a repeater confirms otherwise.

In the same boat here,

Have 6 points from 2022 from the use of a handheld device (it was literally on my passenger seat but ok!)

Came out of a colonoscopy yesterday, dehydrated and in pain with my brain not working. Got caught doing 37 in a 20 on the embankment. Haven’t seen officers with a speed gun there since the 20 limit camera were put into place. Horrible day

Completely my fault but was on the brink of leaking liquid out of the back door. Didn’t tell that to the officer as I knew they’d laugh at it.

Self employed and run a packaging firm, deliveries are usually 3x a week which I carry out. Not looking forward to a ban. Would be the second one I’ve had in my life and it was the most depressing thing I’ve ever experienced.

Doing 37 in a 20 isn't automatically 6 points. Likely you'll have to attend court cos it could be 6 points (and a ban). But, it you can explain the circumstances, the magistrates' sentencing guidelines certainly allow the option to allocate 5 points (and no ban).

If a driving ban really is the most depressing thing you’ve experienced, you’ve got a lot of tough living coming your way.

I can see what he means, I have lost parents, lovers, soulmate, close connections, been betrayed by those close to me over money, have lost serious pursuits of exceptional value, have a terminal illness and would be pretty depressed if banned.

Hmm. Unobservant driver, exceeding the speed limit for the space saver wheel. I'm beginning to lose sympathy.
My recommendation: join the SAS. An old colleague got stopped multiple times and a letter from his CO, saying effectively 'fine him as much as you want, but don't ban him' got the required result.
Failing that, do what I did when I was nicked by an unmarked car; I'm really sorry ma'am, it was stupid and dangerous of me, and I've learned my lesson. I was given a month off to consider my actions 😁

If you read my original post I don't agree with the claimed speed.

No chance of proving the speed recorded was wrong so have too accept it.

Fully aware of the limit for a space-saver so would not exceed that limit knowingly.

Anyway its done now.

Guilty plea entered with request for a Court hearing.

Nothing more I can do until I get my day in Court.

Not being funny but surely as you have entered a guilty plea, how much of a "day in court" do you think you will get, you have said you are guilty.
