Just had a quick chat with someone who knows about this area. He said that the rules surrounding CCTV can be a bit complex, however for your single camera solution you have no problem so long as its not a pan/tilt camera which can see into other peoples homes/gardens. I have 4 cams on my house, only 1 of those can see off my property (pavement outside the house) and apparently that is fine.

Reference to camera mobility is something of a red herring. The issue comes with any coverage outside your property - which can occur with static cameras. Recording brings another issue - regardless of the area covered.

The camera that can "see" the pavement outside your house bluesandtwos brings requirements to comply with the DPA1998 - registation, signage, tape management, etc. It might seem silly ... but it is the law.

I've had similar problems with my Porsche parked in my driveway. I thought about going down the CCTV route but decided against it. I've opted for increased lighting and trimming down the surounding hedges instead. I have a good spread of ambient light with energy saving bulbs that stay on all night and a couple of very bright floodlights that are activated by movement sensors. I've been careful to aim these so they do not annoy neighbours etc.

I agree with previous comments about CCTV cameras, I don't think they are much of a detterent in this type of situation as the scrotes just pull up their hoodies. Also, even if you get a good picture how often does it result in a conviction?

Th scrotes like to work in dimly lit areas, hiding in shadows and behind hedges. Minimise their hiding places and they will go elsewhere.

BUT.....

If they know they are being recorded, they pull their little hoodies up. No identification. No police action.

If they dont' know they are being recorded, they won't pull their hoodies up, but because they are all apelike you probably won't be able to identify them anyway. No police action.

Even if you DO identify them, I wait with eager anticipation (and extreme doubt)for you to say that the Old Bill has charged them successfully and they've been done in court. There's a good chance nothing will come of any video evidence.

For me, the best thing to do is to catch them at it, kill 'em and bury them far far away. However, a more likely option for you is to make it really well lit up, with signs etc., to make 'em go elsewhere. Just don't assume they can read, 'cos they are brain dead. Everybody always says they want to catch them at it...why, what are you going to do when you do. Remember, you crack 'em, you get done (hence the bury them far far away).

You simply can't win! The police were a little unconcerned when I reported the incident and admitted that they were very unlikely to catch them or prosecute them even if they did catch them.

Great!

streaky - from what I was told (someone who used to look after CCTV for our force) he said the "home" user is expmpt from the DPA so long as the cams dont pan and tilt, the images are recorded and not transmitted anywhere and any images are used for private use / police only (i.e you cant give the tape to your mate etc). I might have missed something so I can check again on Monday to get the exact regs.
