Does anyone know how the SPECS cameras on the M1 roadworks adjacent to Jct21/M69 are supposed to calculate your average speed?

The roadworks are 40mph, but as you go into them southbound there are two specs mountings without cameras on them, then about halfway through the roadworks is the 1st SPECS camera, after you come out of the roadworks and all the cones finish and there are National speed limit signs to let you know it is all over, you speed up, but then hit the 2nd SPECS camera about a quarter of a mile after the roadworks. So how can it calculate anyone doing more than 40 in the roadworks when you can blat up to 70 before getting near the 2nd camera?

Also, there is a 3rd camera quite a long way further on after the 2nd camera, this is well outside of the roadworks, so is this going to nick you for doing more than 40, or more than 70, as between the 2nd and 3rd camera is just plain ordinary M1 motorway.

Anyone know?

Having gone through that stretch on the way to Silverstone 2 weeks in a row, i could swear the road works have been moved....

I could be wrong but i'm sure the 2 "active" Specs poles were within the coned sections last weekend..

I think they were, I know they were about two weeks ago anyway. The roadworks now finish before the 2nd set though, my concern is the bit between the 2nd and 3rd set where its just plain old M1 with no road works at all anywhere near them. After the roadworks have finished and you go past the 2nd camera, you correctly think thats it, all done, so you speed up to normal motorway speeds, 80-90, then hit the 3rd camera.

I smell a devious plot

Ahh but even accelerating up to 80 or 90, would your "average" still not be below 70 as the last camera is after the resumption of the NSL ??

Although in reality i suspect the cameras are not active.

I erred on the side of caution and played by the book, unlike many others.

Hopefully there are so few people being forced to fund the installation that they can't always afford to move the cameras at the same time that the works move.

Now, trying it on and doing people anyway would be an interesting move which might just generate plenty of publicity these days ...

i was also confused by this, last tuesday; made me paranoid - on both the up & down journeys. And trying to keep to 40 with all sorts of pressure behind you, isnt straightforward.

I went through this area twice yesterday going to and from Donnington. I have never seen so many vehicles obeying the speed limit rigorously without a traffic car in sight!

Sorry to ressurect this topic, but is there any need to display 'AVERAGE speed camera' signs rather than the normal 'speed camera' signs?

Be aware that about halfway down the M20, there is a 50 zone that has two SPECS towards the end of the roadworks (on the way to Dover).

Does anyone know whether these are likely to have sensible thresholds set (as per Gatso's) when used in 'open' roadworks, (i.e. 50 limit, trigger speed = 56/57/58)?

I think I went through there at an indicated 56-58 on sat....

TIA.
