Just received a NIP for 79mph southbound on the M40 on the 29th March - will I be offered a speed awareness course?

No points currently, bit annoyed I wasn't travelling a mile an hour or two less...

Oh, and I had Waze on and it didn't tell me until I'd already seen the van, by which time it was too late.

Yes, I would expect you will be offered a SAC.

IIRC enforcement starts at 10% plus 2 so 79mph in an nsl.

Just out of interest, whereabouts on the M40?

Indeed - a bit of a shock on the UK’s autobahn.

It was North of Warwick services - the NIP says B4463 M40 over bridge, Hampton Road, Sherbourne.

There were no road works, or speed restrictions, just the usual 70mph motorway.

Yep. I got a SAC for 79 on the M62. 1 mph less and I’d have got nothing.

And another SAC in 2012 for 36 in a 30. 1 mph less and I’d have got nothing.

Presumably this was for "inconsiderate driving" or similar rather than the speed itself? I.e. driving too slowly?

Ridiculous outcomes, but as we know, the law is the law is the law is the law is the law is the law...

Your maths needs some work. Try doing 10%+2 in the 30. You'd need to be doing 2mph less.

You can generally break the speeding laws with impunity provided you keep within the well-publicised buffer. Enforcement has to start somewhere.

Not much excuse on the M way - even my van has cruise

Either set it for GPS 77 (to give you 1mph leeway) or at GPS 84 to do the same to avoid points, anything in between is pointless

Personally, I would say GPS 77 is a bit close, I use GPS 75 as a maximum.

Don't forget 84 won't avoid points if you have already had an SAC.

Also if the offence is in Scotland where we don't get offered SACs.

I've been through hundreds of cameras set to 77 on Waze

I haven't for almost 20 years - although that was a 2 day course - which clearly worked biggrin

The M40 has not been an ‘autobahn’ for a few years now.

Presumably if the actual speed was 79 the car's speedo will be reading 80 something. Just keep it beginning with a 7.
