I have often thought, whilst watching interminable footage of Plod chasing after fleeing cars for mile after mile... 'How much simpler if they just fired a rocket-powered grapnel into the back of it...'

For how many chases there are it occurs to me that the police should have a code to just disable the ECU on every car...I appreciate that if it can be made by a man then it can be defeated by a man but on the whole they could bring a lot of stops to a safe end.
They could phone it through to the control room.

I remember recently there was a spate of range rovers being stole by exactly that method!They could phone it through to the control room.

You drive along behind it, with an accomplice, armed with baseball bats. When you are in a quiet place you switch off it's engine remotely with a phone app, and unlock it's doors. You then walk up to the rr holding bat, and ask the occupant to get out. I'm not sure that wheel net would be particularly effective
The target truck is being driven compliantly, and the police vehicle is obviously large and heavy itself. There's a trade off between handling and size, so I doubt traf pol would want to pilot a huge SUV around when chasing scroats.
Personally, I am always amazed at how stupid some scroats are - ie ending up in cul de sacs or getting lost, or overcooking things.
Most are off their head / way out of their depth I suppose though, and the police have a massive advantage being able to get people ahead.
I take a guilty pleasure when scroats defeat the intentions of plod and makes their escape. Though in real life the criminal is usually taking massive risks putting people in danger, which takes the shine of it somewhat, so no, I would not be happy if they crashed into my mum/kids etc.
I sometimes wonder what would happen if criminals got organised, and phoned a mate to head off the police car heading them off? It would only take a few in "pool" cars and the scant number of police cars around would soon get overwhelmed.
I have an "all managers" meeting tomorrow afternoon, so will ponder on that topic whilst being presented with our latest transformation plan....

Remote disabling is a Thatcham level (I dont recall which) and the last time I looked, is a proposal for all new carsThey could phone it through to the control room.

Let's hope it works better than 'smart motorways' - I just watched the documentary. If only the Highways Agency was as good at making cameras and radar work as they are at evasive corporate BS. And on that theme, it's funny how cameras and radar on motorways are so unreliable, but when Plod uses cameras and radar to get you at 35 in a 30, it works perfectly every time...iDrive said:

There used to be an American program called Bait car, which the Police could shut down and secure the car once it had been stolen. This is obviously doable would be the same technique as the Thatcham one.
