Do you guys know if life insurance/income protection etc. premiums are considerably higher for BIB? I'm considering getting cover for illness/accidents/death and the rest (not a homeowner, and don't have cover already). Are ther BIB-specific deals available once you're in?

When you join you will probably be given the sell from the police federation. There are deals out there for police.

Some firms will not insure police officers but some do very good deals for us.

If you need specifics then feel free to email me.

My force (TVP) have insurance arranged via the Fed to Stuart Harvey - I cannot recommend them too highly. I have paid for years and this year had two claims - one for time off following 4 fractures and also a holiday cancellation (because of the fractures). Both settled by return of post. Excellent.

Never found any favourable car insurance though.

I haven't noticed premiums being any higher. I don't tend to stick to police only offers, as most of the time they are higher than normal rates.

If I don't get higher premiums then no one will, looking at my history of injuries etc etc....

I've decided to hang on for the sales pitch and take it from there - I'll check other firms as well before taking the plunge.

Using confused.com I discovered that I should be able to get around 15%-20% off a premium for an Escort Cosworth once I'm in the job.

I have had insurance refused because of my job, or the risk was pushing the premium upto 4x that of when i called up and said i was in a differing employment.
But i have had cheaper car insurance. Really depends on the insurer.
