It's not the point of the post Wildy, so I'll keep it brief. I just wanted to answer your point about the "Marshall plan" and destruction after the war.

After WW2 the Americans poured millions if not billions of US dollars into Germany and I think Japan.

- Without this - they would not have achieved the position in world economy they currently hold - despite some downturns.

Perhaps - they did not wish to repeat mistake of Versailles Treaty reparations - too - where Weimar borrowed from States to repay damages to France - because Allies threatened seizure of Ruhr - collapse of Wall Street - ensuing Great Depression ...helped Hitler's rise and the rest..

With Japan - interesting documentary recently about immediate post war deals with Japan ... (but History was just one of those "extras" they chucked at us as part of General Abi paper... - just general overview basic knowledge really as opposed to "depth"

Not so Britain, a Marshall plan for it's ally was refused by the yanks. Britain was on it's knees and bankrupt. after a few years they agreed to offer us "a loan" with interest to be paid and "conditions" attached.

Perhaps - they may have seen miltitary aid etc as contribution of sorts already.

But UK still paying off this loan - with accruing interest. One would think already offset by use of airport in Libyan raid (Thatcher's reign) und current fiasco in Iraq.

Strangely enough, they are the self same "conditions" being offered to countries now by the American lead "world bank"......

Is it any wonder that we didn't recover when our "buddies" bled us dry?

Indeed.. strange "friends" we have. "Special relationship" indeed

But back to topic ...

Note they appear to have passed the buck to the 43 Chief Constables to debate and discuss on this. So perhaps all not lost yet... Was not a lot of news released following the meeting on Monday apart from that one item on news which I nearly missed - as was so short ...

Anyone noticed that the latest proposals map the merged forces onto the EU regions? I wonder ...
