Unmarked cars are quite easy to spot, but our fleet of plain cars change every 8 weeks.

What's the difference between unmarked cars and plain cars?

Nothing, slip of the old keyboard/brain.

Plain/unmarked, same thing.

I saw a unmarked volvo being driven very badly ie loads of throttle and understeer and not alot of progress and i was almost knocked of my bike by a traffic car so my opinion of the polices driving is not good i'm afraid anyway i've seen a purple mondeo v6 around cannock

Cleveland is my area and I've never seen it. They use Skoda, Honda and Peugeout.

That Scoob would set alarm bells ringing if I saw it, firstly if the occupants didn't wave, secondly how many STi Owners have a full sized and legal plate without dealership details or "SIDC members do it (insert pun here)"
Finally, you should be able to spot an unmarked just by the drivers posture and how it's driven.

South Essex have amongst others a few 5 series BMW's both old and new shape.

Dark blue and black. Black one is a new shape 535d and I am told it spends alot of time on M25 and A127.

Not exactly unmarked, but spotted 5 car transporter lorry things (the double decker ones) parked up on Dyke Road, Brighton this morning, full to the gunnals with mainly marked Freelanders and various unmarked cars (of different types, possibly unmarked panda cars?)

Must have been 30 odd police cars in total. I know the Labour Party Conference finished yesterday but would the BiB ship cars down and back on transporters? I guess it would save them a few quid in petrol!

They are not so easy to spot these days, used to be easy with lots of ariels and two rear view mirrors. They have removed these so as to blend in. The Octavia vRS seems to be the new Omega, loads of 'em

Yep, the Octavia seems to be the new unmarked traffic car en-vogue these days. Seen a fair few of them (various colours) stalking the M3. Black Volvo S60's also seem to be a firm favorite along that route too.

I've also heard a rumour that there's an unmarked motorcycle cruising the M4. My guess is it's a Pan European.

more points to add to a "general spotters list"

never more than 3 years old, usually less
no stickers of any kind
no dealer name on numberplate

I used to think this as well (along with the "no model designation" theory e.g. LX, GHIA etc), but I've since heard (might even have been here on PH) of unmarked police cars with stickers in windows and other add-ons to 'blend in' with the masses.

Does anyone know for definite whether the BiB are prohibited from having stickers/model designations/dealer names on numberplates etc on their cars?

Thing is, the Skoda is effective because it doesn't break down.

Dear Jim, could you please fix it for me....to have a reliable, well built Omega?

Why are all large Vauxhalls st boxes? Fond memories of the old Senator/Monza.

Today in Bristol I saw a Volvo S60 T5 unmarked car (WJ03something iirc). Stuck out a mile, solid dark blue ffs. Only plod would get that colour. Had a pair of roof bars on it though, have they modified these into a thin strip of blue flashy lights?

A bit late in replying to this, sorry...

But if that really is the case mate, it just goes to prove that yet agen, police are doing themselves no favours but putting lying scum on the front line.

This was at a show that a the parents of a sadly departed friend, orginised, and that they turned up with there car to the show and to do the whole road saftey, which i must add, was very good. It shoched virtualy everyone there i think.

But, im not saying there all lying scum, im just saying im still to have the poleasure of meeteing a member of the police force that can actualy tell the truth. There must be some out there.......
