A fine idea. If I knew the vehicles in my area I'd tell you. Perhaps I'll find out by following this thread.

IMHO.......Tough!! Serves them right for being sneaky.
Marked cars/cameras etc fair enough, but the unmarked cars / plod hiding round corners etc is a pain in the a**e!!

I'm all up for a list. But remember they move the cars around so it's hard to keep upto date info.

I do however support the use of unmarked traffic cars. Generally (yeah ok I know), they only go for people taking the piss. And they will be more likely to find people driving like a c*ck who would notice a marked car and behave.

Don't fancy having one of you guys behind me if you're busy checking your list of unmarked cars.

No point in a spotter's thread, cars move too much between divisions and are replaced regularly.

Unmarked cars tend to be family saloons, think Mondeo, Astra etc. To save money they are usually bog standard spec, missing hubcaps are a giveaway as they fall off when "making progress".

The blue lights tend to be in the front grill, sunvisors and headrests and they are usually double crewed. Also there will be radio aerials on the roof.

Grew up around Police stations and cop cars!

While not quite of Lambo/Porker status, it seems that plod are still getting some very tasty patrol cars, both marked and unmarked. There's a lovely marked Evo knocking about Brighton town centre atm, as well as a few marked Range Rovers. Several unmarked Evos seem to patrol the A23/M23 on a regular basis (I've seen two in different colours recently). Smart-looking Beemers and Mercs also abound.

Some more info, "keep 'em peeled"

They are not so easy to spot these days, used to be easy with lots of ariels and two rear view mirrors. They have removed these so as to blend in. The Octavia vRS seems to be the new Omega, loads of 'em

Yup, Sussex/A23 a couple of silver Evo VIIIs, a dark blue Omega and a couple of white Merc C-Class estates (they did have a dark blue Golf GTi, but havent seen that one for a while)

Wilts have what I thought was a light blue/silver Skoda Octavia. Reason I now know this is previous post mentioned multiple aerials on the roof. I suspected as much when i saw the car and the bloke driving gave me a funny look when he noticed the number plate half hanging off due to my Wifes little indescretion the other day.

...yes, cos I obviously have the list printed onto A4 and stuck to my windscreen so that I can double-check every car I see against the list.

more points to add to a "general spotters list"

never more than 3 years old, usually less
no stickers of any kind
no dealer name on numberplate
and usually two blokes who look like coppers sitting in the front

great yarmouth, lowestoft : dark grey omega v6/ dark grey vectra v6.

norwich, wymondham: silver astra coupe/ dark blue volvo.

all populated by vermin in my humble O. especially the ones that i see baiting people in the outside lane, then when people speed up to get out of the way, guess what? they nick em.

hell, its good to see real crime being stamped down on. gives one a glow of safety. indeed, the pensioner accross the road who was burgled last week feels much safer knowing that guys with neons are being fined by the dozen. cant speak for anyone else, but it helps me sleep at night.

Unmarked cars are quite easy to spot, but our fleet of plain cars change every 8 weeks.

I used to work opposite a police station so I used to see the undercover cars roll in and out of the car park. These were mainly BMW 3 series, Merc CLK's, Civic Type-Rs, Skodia Octavia RS, Subaru Impreza and various MG's.
To actually spot on is quite difficult but can be done. Usually their will be a camera mounted on the windscreen, usually just above the dash or mounted on the rear view mirror. What the officer is wearing is a dead give away, normally wearing a white shirt with a black stab proof vest with POLICE written on it.
