Arsonists destroy speed camera Oct 18 2005

Police in Warwickshire appealed for witnesses today after a £50,000 speed camera was destroyed by arsonists as bystanders filmed their handiwork.

The Warwickshire Casualty Reduction Partnership said the GATSO camera had been damaged beyond repair by the attack at its site near The Belfry golf course.

The vandals placed tyres around the camera housing on the A4091 at Wishaw, near Coleshill, at about 11.30pm last night before setting them alight.

Warwickshire Police said a number of people were reported to be videoing at the scene as the camera burned, although they had left by the time officers attended.

A spokesman for the casualty reduction partnership, Stephen Rumble, condemned those responsible for the offence, the latest in a string of arson attacks on cameras in the area in recent years.

Mr Rumble said: "We have had a few similar instances but generally speaking they have been isolated and there has been no obvious pattern.

"Putting aside the fact that (the latest incident) was being filmed, it's very disappointing that people will damage a piece of equipment that is there to save lives."

Anyone with any information about the blaze is asked to contact Coleshill Road Policing Unit on 01926 415000.

That will probably win an award for the quietest phone line. Ever.

"Hi, I think I've a few suspects for your camera arson"

"OK, who are they"

"They're listed on pages 1 to 256 of the local phone book!"

I'm hearing more and more of these camera burning incedents day by day. Maybe it's time the gov. took note.
