Following on from www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=221066&f=141&h=0 , could anyone in the know give any actual statistics for percentage of stolen vehicles recovered?

It would be great to know if in situations like this, say 70% were recovered within 48 hours or something.

Obviously all circumstances are different but some stats would be great.

Cheers.

Nasty experience having all your vehicles nicked in one go.

I don't have any figures.. but the chance of a motorbike being returned after being nicked next to all! I should know my gixxer6 got borrowed without my permission in April, luckily the insurance payed out and I have a replacement.

Would also be interested to know how successful this is with trackers installed as well, as you would 'assume' in that situation the odds were high.

All I can say is with regards to trackers is that I got a call from the company that provided mine on Saturday morning to say that the car was moving but the engine wasn't on. It was at the dealers so I phoned them to be told that they were putting it on the back of the lorry to take it down to the bodyshop. So I'd be surprised if they did not have a high recovery rate (espically as the insurance company would not cover it unless it had one -- they aint cheap). Although in saying this I did not get a call when they put it on the lorry when they picked it up.

Kind regards,

Similar experience here. Dealer moved it 5 miles on a lorry to bring it to the dealership where I was awaiting it's return following minor work. Lorry arrived, so did 2 police cars. They gave the dealer & his driver an ear-full. Now have it fitted to all my cars.

Trackers aren't perfect for a number of reasons

1) There are only so many places you can stick one on a car
2) There is no visual warning confirming the device is working. Many find their's don't
3) If you only have UK cover they won't alert when the car is moving on the car ferry
4) The device power's down after 6 hours so they can't get a response from the unit
5) The device needs clear sky to get a fix
6) The device needs GSM coverage to send location

"The recovery rate for motorcycles was 32% in 2000 compared to 65% for cars. Split by type, 26% of motorbikes were recovered while mopeds and scooters had a slightly higher rate of 37%."

So based on year 2000 figures statistically a 74% chance of never seeing your stolen motorcycle again! Think those figures confirm my thoughts exactly. Much higher chance of seeing it again if its a car.
