With the race thing. I dont think its illegal to be a racist or even write to the court to say that you are a racist, homophobic etc.

You can have whatever views you like provided its not actioned against someone else or published so as to incite hatered and the like.

(just a train of thought and not expressing any views of mine)

Hmm, unless you are a real outlaw and been in prison, statistically most people in their lifetime will be called at least once.

That beats the being struck by lightning statistic by a factor of a few (maybe even 100) thousand.

Update. Hurrah!

Sense seems to of prevailed; I’ve just received a letter form the court services saying that this time I am excused from jury service on this occasion.

Looks like it worth writing that rather long letter explaining how poor doing the service would make me.

A bit of faith has been restored.

Last time I was asked I did exactly as you have and achieved the same result. I went for the damage to the business that would be caused by a critical resource (me) not being able to fulfill contractual obligations with clients argument - and they accepted it without any problems.

Glad its worked out for you.

While I'm glad for you that you managed to avoid the financial losses associated with jury service, this does demonstarte the weakness of the system. The people who don't try to get out of jury service are, for the most part, those with time on their hands. So I assume that cases are judged by a load of pensioners, unemployed and other easily available bods.

Is this necessarily a right-minded collection of peers that truely reflects the moral perspective of our society?

I'm 65 and I've always wanted to do it. However, no-one has ever asked me.

I got called up in March 2003, my employer payed me normally for my time away. They did however stress that I should make it clear that any more than two weeks would begin to impact the company.
I got a fraud case that was 2weeks and a day. I couldn't believe how much time a defence barrister can waste before the judge realises this and stops him. Defense barrister repremanded in court by the Judge on no less than 4 occations for basically taking the p*ss and trying to bore the jury to death with irrelevance!

I've just realised that my 2years are almost up so could potentially be called again. Essentially once you have served on a jury you automatically can ask not to be if you get picked again within a 2 year period.
