A Westminster Council spokesman said that while the parking attendants were correct in issuing the tickets, these were extraordinary circumstances and the fines will be waived.

So how are these extraordinary circumstances?

They were extraordinary in that there was a whale in the Thames.

What is hardly mentioned is that it was probably already sick and swam up the Thames to die. It didn't want to be put back in sea.

I agree with comments earlier that 'Save the Whale' charities will have done pretty well out of this, with increased donations. I'm astonished to learn that one of the guys leads the UK arm of a group that researches beached mammals - how many of those to we have in the UK?

Don't see why anyone is surprised at this. Theres a story in the Daily telegraph today accusing councils of using parking fines as an easy source of revenue. London Boroughs are amongst the worst for this.

I've deliberately not followed this story as I know it would only get me mad. Yet again a massive rescue operation is mounted to save a creature that lost its way yet there are thousands of humans suffering with ailments and problems that could be remedied with that 5K.

Do they honestly and genuinely expect us to believe that their actions in dealing with the whale should warrant exmeption from parking restrictions?

It's a wonder they don't want blue lights and two-tone horns so they can get to whale incidents quicker next time. What utter bollox!

We should help all animals especially rare and beautiful creatures like the whale, its human beings that are ruining this planet and stupid comments like that really rile me!! Thanks to a stupid, greedy council those kind dedicated people have been fined for doing a kind act, that REALLY pisses me off......................

Humans are ruining this planet? didnt some try to help this whale?
I know our local friendly dolphin that visits a beach near me loves to be stroked, and again and again. He loves it but I fear if I asked for special dispensation from parking charges, the council would laugh at me - despite my trendy wet suit.

Clearly this planet yo yos between different environements over the milleniums - dont think humans are runing the planet or can alter the yoyo effect. I blame the volcanoes, metorites, solar flares and other carbon based organisism...... Actually the dinosaurs have a lot to answer for..... also bloody jets really polute the air, I blame the large passenger ones. If planes cant play at flying fast and droping bombs and killing things they really shouldnt be up there. imho

Gready councils - not really just inefficent, inept and verbal masterbakers.

Yeah, right, whatever. If you really think that people have zero choice or impact on the surroundings, then perhaps you like to go live next to a Chinese chemical plant?

I find it a bit sad really that the best us petrol heads can do as a response to some of the extreme views of sandle-istas is rubbish an attempt by a bunch of dedicated folk to preserve an endagered species. Whether it was endagered by people or planet doesn't really matter.

I can see the point that you have to draw the parking fine line somewhere, but shouldn't we be pushing back against parking fines being used to generate revenue instead of supporting rip off councils on this one? If you don't agree with that statement, then what's your view on congestion charging or speed cameras for revenue? It's all the same game.

And when popping into the shops for a pack of fags rates as important as making a contribution to environmental preservation I'll be really happy - then we'll know the job is done

The next time my sister gets a ticket while on call (she's a midwife) I'll tell her to put a whale rescue sticker on her car!

What's said in jest

Keep coming with your worthy examples chaps, because it just adds more grist to the mill. People are getting tickets because parking has become an unfair form of tax.

So are the Piston Heads for or against this tax?

I happen to think that these marine charities have probably paid a blinder. Their income will rapidly rise in the short term due to the exposure they've just received, and good for them
