I took part in an ANPR operation today and there were quite a few Police on it. It didnt take long for a middle aged person who i can best describe as being an idiot to walk past and start pointing his finger at all the Police bodies and shaking his head. I really and truly wanted to get hold of him and explain the situation but against my better judgement i refrained from doing so.

However, to the point.

Any vehicle which doesnt have Insurance is taken away from the driver forthwith. This is a new Force policy on such operations and to expedite this we have a large car transporter on scene which will take about 12 cars.

It wont surprise you to know that after one hour 30 mins the transporter was full. This coupled with countless process and 4 good quality arrests made it a very productive couple of hours.

It just goes to show how many uninsured, unlicenced cars are on the road..........and not one speeding ticket was issued.

For those that might want to whinge about all the resources dealing today, we were all Traffic Police....the local Police were still able to deal with Robbers and Burglars and day to day stuff that was coming their way. Oh, and we still had Trafpols on patrol to deal with a Fatal RTC.

I dont have a problem with resources being used in the way you describe TC.
The more of these uninsured dicks you guys grab, the safer we all are.
Go get em good Bud!

What happens if the computer flags a car as dodgy, but the owner seems honest and says the insurance was due on 31 Jan and they changed insurers. The DVLA DB may not have the info, the owner may not have the covernote with them. Would you impound the car? Does the DLVA computer tell you when insurance expired etc.? (I'm guessing yes, allowing you to decide whether this could be the case).

I support the general principle, but I know my car's insurance, MOT and tax are up at the same time, meaning when I tried to tax online it wouldn't let me because it didn't have confirmed cover or something. As a law abiding citizen who would be annoyed but accept being given a producer in such circumstances, I'd be terrified of running into an ANPR sting avec transporter in the week or two the DVLA takes to catch up.

Or were all the cars you 'lifted' unroadworthy etc.?

Only one of the cars was tatty, the others simply didnt have any Insurance.
We dont just take the car away without exploring as many avenues as we can. We made several phone calls to Ins companies where the drivers pleaded that they did have Insurance. However, upon speaking to the Companies, the drivers werent telling the truth.

The bottom line is, if we are in doubt we dont take the car.

I forgot to mention, when we take the cars away, the driver gets a Fixed penalty ticket for 6 points and a £200 fine.

Personally ive got no sympathy and they deserve what they get for driving without Insurance.

6 points and 200 sheet fine is cheap at the price, seeing as most peoples insurance is at least double that, and the pond life who drive uninsured will laugh when they get their 6 points as they know damn well they wont be insuring the next car they buy in the pub cr park..

I have NEVER seen an ANPR op in Hertfordshire,- seen plenty of speed cameras unfortunatly though..

It should really be a bigger fine than that.

From experience of my own jobs at Court, the fine varies (quite wrongly IMHO)depending on which Court you attend.
Ive seen it from £650 right down to £125

I say crush the car if its blatant use of vehicle on a road without Insurance. A bit harsh but it might give some people a rocket up the...bum.

I quite agree.

and Tony, if you know the civvy who mans the camera van outside Hertford nick, please do me a favour and tell him he needs to go back to basics and review his skills at formulating an opinion that a car is speeding BEFORE he activates his laser- he lasered me when I was going down the hill the other day and I was doing 15mph, cos I knew damn well he was there..

The middle aged man was right, (they often are) its disgusting that such resources are used for such trivial reasons. If I ever get any power the first thing in the bin will be the database. All this could be eliminated by simply making liability cover part of road tax and road tax part of fuel cost. Sack DVLA and sack the traffic police. There is planty of alternative work we need roads building, we have neglected it since the 1930s. ANPR is a diabolical breach of human rights anyway.

Totally agree, except the bit about sacking Traffic Police.

My mate was stopped last night, after he drove past an ANPR van. It works in the dark I guess.

The ANPR computer said his car was not taxed, but it was.

Unfortunately, he was not displaying the tax disc, so plod were all smiling and thinking they had got a result.

But mate phoned his wife to bring documents to him, then he was free to go. Plod was then all dissapointed.

There were about fifty plod on duty there he reckons.

Having been the victim of an uninsured loss accident, I wish this was done more regularly.

Well done.
