It's a 30, but it needs some restrictions to lower this, the type of roads and the concentration of parked cars/children/side streets etc. means that 30 is often too fast and of course in this country it's socially unacceptable to voluntarily do under the speed limit.

It's just that not everyone who calls for lower speeds in certain circumstances is a mad lentilist grauniad reader. I want higher limits on clear motorways and country nsls but lower ones in built-up areas.

Speed freak!

Sounds like you where on the bypass to get that fast!!

I wasn't aware of any roads in Edinburgh where you could exceed 20mph, not unless you have a 4x4 to clamber through the potholes and trenches across the road.

"Twenty is Plenty"

What nonsense. I see too many unreasoanble limits to believe these 20 limits will only be posted where necessary. I'm sure they will be seized upon by car hating councils across the country.

Agreed. Sounds like "small town" mealy mouth thinking to me. What about stopping people wandering into the road? I can still remember clearly the green cross code having been drummed into me from all those years ago at school.

There's no personal responsibility now. Just bu66er it up for everyone else.

Calling for lower limits doesn't slow down those who already ignore the more than adequate signage though does it.

If you want to target those who do 40mph wrecklessly, then a sign isn't going to do it.

I feel the same, I live on a Cul De Sac street, and 15-20mph is my max speed, yet every night I hear Mr Scooby MY03 fly up and down wastegate chattering, but there isn't much a 20mph sign would do, he's already doing silly speeds ignorant of what is appropriate.

A police officer or two judging his speed as driving without due care, or dangerous driving and a short ban might get his mindset a bit more worked out though!

Yes. It's the usual lazy "policing" that we seem to have to endure now. Just put an absurd blanket restriction on everyone to cover a minority of eventualities. (Which won't work on the main culprits anyway. Sad and misguided.

I feel that 20mph zones have their place, BUT, and it is a big but, they should be subject to times of enforcement, 20 mph past a school at 3 am is silly.

Got to be able to stop in time, when some youngsters decide
to cross the road without due care & attention.

And how about educating youngsters NOT to step into the road without looking? It really irks me to see people banging on about this without using a bit of the old grey matter. A child could be quite easily killed if hit at 20mph. It just lulls drivers and pedestrians into a false sense of security.

Here in California, if a school bus has stopped to allow pupils to disembark you do not pass it. You wait until it moves off. And speed restrictions are relaxed overnight and at weekends.

Liebchen - that does not happen in UK....speed restriction ist not lifted...ist how they make more cash really....

In Germany, Austria und Switzerland - you do not overtake the school bus which ist picking up/dropping off..und in UK .... ist traffic jam anyway.... so not a problem really...

The difficulty in a big, international city like Edinburgh, is enforcing it. The police hate more streets and roads added to their ever-increasing list of areas to be patrolled. If they don't have enough staff to do it local residents will call in demanding so-and-so driver be reprimanded.

The strongest lobby against speed restrictions is ... the police force.

...Most so - called rat runs have horrid little humps.... in the UK.

City drivers, for reason of arrogance, haste, or forgetfulness, frequently drive faster than is safe for narrow crowded streets. And as I stated earlier, a few will break the law flagrantly, such as driving the wrong way down a One-Way street.

In Kendal ....ist more case of some one changing rules und really daft road signs...

But when in the Lancashire und Manchester towns or in Penrith or Carlisle....have not really seen people driving wrong way on one ways. (Cyclists are another matter... for some reason .... some do appear to be a bit "blind" ...

But perhaps Cumbrian und North Western drivers.. are above average.. as have never come across this arrogance where I drive.. und jawohl .. have seen some daft things in Manchester, Penrith, Carlisle, Chester, Liverpool, Lancaster....but have never met the driver driving wrong way down a one-way....in past 20 years of living in Norht West UK und driving in the area.. very regularly in rush hours....

It is alarming to residents and pedestrians, a great many who are car owners. So, the vote for 20 mph is supported by walkers and drivers alike. In any event, when we visit other great cities of Europe and find the ancient historic center blocked off from traffic we appreciate it.

I sometimes think my own family are only ones to observe 20 mph in Cumbria's villages....but with regard to Europe .. you appear to forget the excellent public transport - fully integrated und cheap... und the park/ride schemes at affordable cost..

Ach ja .. Euro citizens pay in direct taxes ..ist a difference though... as we see something in return...

Here: Stealth...und indirect und nothing much to show for it.. und now it seem I am to be taxed on quality of my cavity wall insulation, choice of light bulb, amount of waste.. (I have 7 kids in household.... sometimes more as we foster....und I shop at farm shops, wrap my stuff in newspaper to enable it to breathe, place my garbage in the recylcle skipsm compost my garden und grow some of own food toom und shop und donate to charity shops.... und I knit, sew und I use up leftover foods in soups und salads and so on...

Und by the way... expenditure of car repairs ist pretty LOW.. a sig of a GOOD und COMPETENT und SKILLED driver...

I thus consider myself to be responsible, caring und able to have my FUN

Its an excellent idea, but it will never happen.

As far as UK Gov seems to be concerned, anything that happens
in the road is the motorist's fault.

Kids will be kids and asking them to have some common sense
goes against the grain in the modern world.
