A load of specs have been put up on the M11 recently, with a 40 mph limit, with about 4 or 5 camera gantrys along the stretch of roadworks.

where / how are they calculating the average speed from?
is it over each individual section or is it across the whole length of the roadworks?

if they are doing it individually then you could lose your licence in the space of 4 miles!!

I think it's a case of the first set starts the clock.. then the second set stops the clock and works out your speed. Then you're not timed until the 3rd set which records you over the distance to the fourth set.

So what you have are two stretches that are measured, and a gap in the middle. So you could get 2 tickets...

At least this is how my Snooper detector deals with a similar setup near Doncaster.

A lapse of speedo concentration between one gantry set is sufficient, I know we've been done on the M1 48mph in a 40mph at 2.30am, so bloody dangerous I remember the adrenalin pumping - not

Went past them yesterday. Didn't see the 1st set until I was right on top of them. No lighting near them although the other sets were clearly visible.

Ended up stuck behind some imbecile who insisted driving at 35mph. Specs really are the worst. Oh, I didn't see one single active workman through the whole section at 8pm.

That's a bit harsh, they're only trying to protect their license and the 'workforce'.

Is 35mph in a 40mph zone really unreasonable ? Surely posted speed limits are maximums not minimum targets? Lighten up. Losing 5mph for a couple of miles will hardly cause your world to end.

Indeed.

Can you really blame people for not trusting the cameras to be set at a reasonable trigger speed?

Where on the M11? I drove City->Stansted the other day and don't recall roadworks or SPECS, but then it was raining so hard, my numberplate would have been hard to spot.

Just north of Stanstead.

Got a taxi home from work at 1 ish the other night as we had been working late to get something finished in time to get it on a 6.30am flight out of stanstead. Fotuneately I woke up while we were going through the road works and saw one of the gantries which probably saved a fair chunk of my license when I was heading south again a couple of hours later!
