I put it to these people that drivers are frequently quite well aware thet there's an emergency vehicle somewhere, but the sirens/two tones are really hard to localise, they're entirely the wrong kind of sound for the purpose, you need a broad frequency spectrum available to adequately localise a sound, and current systems do not provide it.

Where did you get deaths from? The article seems to be just about crashes.

The only crash I know about that involved an emergency vehicle in Yorkshire was last year when a big black taxi was driving through the lights and a Police car came speeding through the other way (through a red light) and broad-sided the taxi, actually causing it to roll!

Don't you just love the comment from BRAKE that "no emergency vehicle should break any speed limit". Have you ever heard such absolute twaddle?
Do that lot actually live in the same World as the rest of us.
Still, it does show them for what they really are. Idiot f***wits.

Hang on, when I was a student, or younger, I saw a news article about a new sort of siren that made, along with the usual sound, a static-like buzz which was very easy to locate directionally.

That's 10 years ago - why do we still not have them?!?

No need for them to drive over the speed limit?????

So I guess if one of them has need to call a fire engine cos their house is burning down, or an ambulance if their child stops breathing, when they call 999 they will tell the operator to tell the emergency vehicle to take their time and not speed... yea likely!

We do, buts its short range for when you are on top of something. They never managed to put white noise into the actual siron itself so its just a third sound in the series.

Only worth using when you are close.

BRAKE should imagin this

Assume built up area and no traffic jams/holdups at all.

to travel 5 miles

Ambulance to serious RTA at 30mph would take 10 mins.
Ambulance to serious RTA at 40mph would take 7 and a half mins.

2 and a half mins. Make a good add wouldnt it on TV.

"
Pic flahing ambulance light, sound of someone choking, spluttering difficluty breathing.
for 2 and half mins..

with the words at the end - Thats how much longer it would take for an ambulance to reach you at 30 mph instead of 40mph. "

Makes you think.

Heehee.... well let's hope the BRAKE morons get attacked, or their house catches fire, or they need an ambulance soon. Then our BiB, Firemen and Ambulances can rush to the rescue at walking pace.

How thick can you be to suggest that there is *no* reason for ESVs to break limits .....

Emergency services attending incidents at Brake member's properties should be required to be preceded by a bloke waking in a hi viz jacket and waving a red warning flag

Oh dear! Apart from the nonsense about speed limits I think Brake do have a point (can't believe I am wrote that!)

Emergency vehicles are given flashing lights, sirens and legal dispensations, but it is surely down to the emergency service drivers to anticipate that ordinary drivers with varying degrees of aptitude and experience may do the unexpected. I have seen at least two pictures this year of local accidents involving emergency vehicles answering a call. Yes seconds do count but if there is an accident on the way no-one is going to arrive for a whole lot longer.

Drivers of emergency vehicles have to balance the need for quick progress with the need for safe progress. Slagging off the public is a bit of a cheek to my mind. Any fast driving has to be done responsibly whether by the emergency services or anyone else. Blues and Twos aren't always effective as this report shows.

They have response times to stick to. These response times do not allow for Driving Miss Daisy style perambulations.
The sirens are easy to localise. Hear siren, check mirrors, look out of windscreen, see Emergency vehicle, make room. Works for me.

I truly hope i never see the the day when a member of Brake lives (or doesn't) to regret this twaddle.

Maybe.
