I've known a few "specials" and they've all been sadder than sad except one in there attitudes, absolutely no ability to debate or think for themselves. AFAIK they all ended up in the force too An ex army friend of mine likened them to the TA although I've not known any TA bods. These are the kindda people I'd imagine you'd wanna keep out of the force.

Agreed BlairOut, it's not an easy task. I thought they were the 'eyes and ears' and didn't deal with the same stuff response officers are sent to. I have no opinion of them, as I've no experience of them at all.
My step bro still has to deal, he just has less resources to help him. The theory and the reality are often quite a long way apart. He doesn't get despatched to trouble, it just always happens on his patch.

I remember one special who was pretty reasonable and was taken under the wing of the regulars. If the useles ones were on, we used to devise ways of getting him away from them as they really were sad, useless and a danger to themselves. One of them used to get nicked regularly for impersonating a police officer when off duty. He used to go around saying that he was CID and searching properties in his local community without warrants. Surname sounded like Samsung (maybe some of you know him). He eventually had his deputy doof badge removed and is now a private investigator.

As for PCSO's getting involved in any physical contact, let alone knives, its a travesty that this situation has arisen. They are uniform carriers pure and simple. They are high visibility pretend policing. They are not equipped or trained to get involved in bundles and if they are, someone is going to get killed sooner rather than later. Then what, give them batons or gas to protect themselves?

He's out at night in the roughest part of town. No gas, no cuffs and no baton He has had to tackle nutters with knives while his support drives barely above the limit to assist as they are not allowed to speed

Strange that they won't give him gas/cuffs/baton but will give him knives to tackle criminals with, seems a bit excessive if you ask me

Not sure how I stand on this one tbh. One part of me likens it to politicians i.e. the fact that you want to become one should automatically bar you for life
The another part thinks in general it has to be good .
The final and cynical part of me thinks its a cop out (no pun) as it's cheaper than employing the extra Police you obviously need.........................

I have worked with numerous specials over the years. Some have been better that others, they ranged from being excellent (and better than some regulars) to absolutely dire.

I have no problem working with specials, they provide a needy pool of resources, if you can trust the ones that you are working with they are a godsend, but if they are sub standard, there is nothing worse than going to a domestic/disorder etc etc having to look out for his/her welfare whilst trying to get to the bottom of the situation and deal with problems that present themselves.

Cso's, they do a good job on my patch, but are not sent to any code 1 jobs like domestics, disorders etc etc, they are a good bunch and very willing.

This has got to be the next step hasn't it ?

I didn't realise until recently that since the turn of the year PCSO powers have been increased to allow them to direct traffic It's quite funny watching them in the middle of the road after the football kicks out

I for one would prefer to see 10 extra proper coppers on the streets instead of 25/30 of these wannabees

As for specials, I have a great deal of admiration for anyone giving their time freely for the benefit of others. After all I couldn't do it, could you ?
