I have a neighbour that is out of the Country for most of the year. I see him driving his car when he is back in the Country. I know his car is untaxed and I suspect it is also uninsured and he does not have a driver's license.

If I report it to the Police are they likely to take any action ?

Only if he gets caught speeding.

Anyway......Pickled, phone the DVLA first, they're more likely to pay interest than Plod will. And before we get the little keyboard combatants coming on, no you're not a 'grass' for doing it. If he is in fact taxed then nothing will come of it...

I know, I know, I was being facetious!

Though if he does get caught speeding, he will end up with a few more points than three!

Cheers guys,

I'll use the weblink. I personally have no issues with reporting him.

I suspect that the car is not even registered to him or to the address. He makes a point of parking it in the garage and never leaves it outside. I'm not sure how Plod or the DVLA will catch him but I'll pass the details on.

Is is just me or do others find it despressing that we are turning into a nation of people who almost take glee in reporting neighbours for things.

Prehaps his tax disc has been renewed and is sitting a year's worth of post waiting to be put on the car and he has just forgot - maybe it has fallen down from the windscreen.

How about a friendly chat with him and ask him does he know the disc is expired / fallen off.

You never know maybe he won't report you next time you park the wrong round or more than 9 inches from the curb or whatever little transgression you will make (as we all do).

I've just had to stump up 104 quid for 6 months tax, why shouldn't this fella?

Wot he sed.

I pay £200 a year for my road tax. This guy deserves to have the book thrown at him. If he has a disc then he had nothing to worry about.

I am more concerned about the no insurance thing. That should carry a ten year ban as far as I am concerned.

Shop him.

Exactly. If he continues to drive it is only a matter of time until he goes through an ANPR roadblock. I think I have gone through about 5 in the last year. If he is really driving without tax and insurance then the law will catch up.

Blue polar - so if he has got a disc he can show it and all will be well.

You're presuming that everybody thinks this tax is fair.

The only reason I'd report someone for this is if I suspected they had no insurance or MOT. Unfortunately though, thats something you'd have to guess.

Do the police man these and stop you? I don't think I've ever seen one.

Anyway, the car may not even be registered to him, otherwise the DVLA would come a-knocking, so further chance that it's not insured. Shop him - if it is taxed, fantastic.

I'd never though of that - I'll have to ask my employers to credit my bank account with my full pay rather than deduct the taxes I don't particularly like

Seriously though I've he's untaxed and uninsured it's probably quite a good bet that he hasn't bothered his local MOT tester either.

Just because its not fair doesn't mean we can get out of paying it. As Yugguy says, why should some people assume they can operate outside the law, thereby leaving us to subsidise them?

Its already suspected that the driver is uninsured. And that's already enough reason to report him. Having already suffered from an accident with an uninsured driver, I wouldn't wish the same on anyone else. Plus if he's 'confronted', no matter how politely, if he is deliberately evading then he'd probably lie his a*se off to any question put to him and the questioner would be none the wiser. If he's innocent then he's got nothing to fear.

I don't see what fair has to do with it. Stamp duty isn't fair but we all have to pay it.

If he hasn't got tax then what else hasn't he got? Insurance? A driving licence?

Exactly.

If I knew that he was just untaxed but was insured then I probably wouldnt bother.

But there is no excuse for driving without insurance, and those who are should get into trouble for it.

If you think he is uninsured as well then call the DVLA.

Surely, if the man hasn't a licence, the rest is elementry. How do you know that he hasn't picked up a licence at some point?
