If I buy and SORN a track-day car, can the bloke from my menders drive it on the road on trade plates? (IOW, fetch it away for work/tyres/WHY?)

How about if it's un-MOT'd?

I assume it would be insured under his trade insurance?

Trade Plates are covered at Law by Road Vehicles (Registration and Licensing) Regs 2002. As to who they issued to as Motor Trader is defined:

www.tinyurl.com/94g9

Para 12 (h) Schedule 6 Part II covers use by a Motor Trader

(h) for proceeding to or returning from a workshop in which a body or a special type of equipment or accessory is to be or has been fitted to it or in which it is to be or has been painted, valeted or repaired.

Note that a Trade Plate is the substitute for Excise Duty and does not cover MOT matters which are cocvered by Motor Vehicles (Test) Regulations 1981. Under these Regs it is permitted to use a vehicle on a road without a Test Certificate when submitting/returning it for a pre-booked test or whilst the MOT garage is testing it after repairs. From what stated this does not appear to cover and if no MOT then trailer seems the option.
