Southbound this morning on the M1, 7.30-ish.

Skoda Fabia plodmobile. All liveried up "Community Support Officer" or something.

Followed him for a few miles until he turned off at J22.

All 3 lanes ahead of him were clear, but he sat in lane 2 all the way, at about 75.

What would our resident trafplods have done, had they witnessed him?

Last night I drove from Reading to Stafford starting out about 12.45am - got back some time after 3am.

I was amazed by the numbers of times I came up behind another car driving happily along in the middle lane of what was, apart from them and me, a completely empty motorway. This meant I had to cross from the nearside to outside lane to pass. (I got this on the M40, M42, M6 Toll and M6)

But is it actually an offence?? I suspect not?

If the motorway is empty enough, I see nothing wrong with being in the middle lane, as you now have more room to swerve either side. However if traffic is gaining from behind then clearly you should be moving into lane 1.

Yes...we were all following him

A South Yorkshire police Focus was spotted a while ago near Sheffield...in lane 3 for miles...

Was it doing less than 70? If so I'd get up behind and flash it out of the way.

So clearly such people are also completely inattentive?

Yep... but then again it wouldn't have exactly been hard to overtake him. Imo it's a bit unreasonable to expect PCSOs to be driving gods, or even actually competent at the task - certainly round here they don't seem to be. I'd rather they were good at the community policing bit (no comment).

50 in the roadworks...

It was amusing to watch watch people dashing up lane 2 to undertake, thinking who are these tossers lined up in lane 3 when the middle lane's empty?

Some panic braking ensued.....

rofl rofl rofl rofl

Never happen - In my fairly extensive experience now with our local CSO they are glorified traffic wardens with a hitler complex. Waste of my tax money. I hate speed cameras with a passion but I would rather have another camera than put up with CSO's.

MLM's drive me bonkers where they're holding up L2 traffic and L3 is busy too, but I drive a lot at odd hours when I can (and do) extensively use Lane 1. However it's badly rutted in some places so I use L2. I invariably find that any vehicle catching me up is already in L2 (ie they're a MLM too, but just going faster than me).
If there's nothing in L3 then I stay where I am and let them move to L3 to pass me.

I believe that in theory it's is a driving without due and consideration offence, but I don't think it's often (if at all) prosecuted.

A bit off topic, but I'm intrigued to understand in what way HATOs have annoyed you?

On the one hand, HATOs are serving a purpose. My mate who is a recovery driver is well happy that he can now turn up on scene to find an additional brightly coloured vehicle plus set of blokes in dayglo jackets to keep an eye on the traffic whilst he risks his neck changing a wheel or whatever.

On the other hand, they are (indirectly) a menace. I was on the M4 on Sunday in lane 3, following someone (at a safe distance, I might add) at around 85mph. On seeing a HATO wagon parked up on the hard shoulder dealing with a breakdown, they decided that the best course of action was to stand on the brakes and get their speed down to about 60mph. Totally nonsensical, and bloody dangerous to boot. Not specifically the HATOs fault - but sadly any liveried-up vehicle, whether plod or not, causes panic braking these days.

They also cruse along at 60mph in lane 1 causing more braking and muppets refusing to pass them because they think the HATOs can pull them for speeding, no doubt.

A good idea, but in today's climate where drivers perceive that everyone in a vehicle with yellow stripes on it is looking for speeders, they do cause a lot of problems.

They haven't...

Somebody mentioned HATO and, in a blinding flash of incredibly brilliant humour, it occurred to me that HATO sounded very Japanese...

So I sat and ruminated for about an hour...

Then it suddenly struck me that the Japanese had a natural bent to climb in aircraft and crash them into the enemy....

Then I ruminated for another hour.....

Then it suddenly struck me that HATO sounds like KATO (probably another Japanese name)....

Then I ruminated for another hour....

Then it suddenly struck me that calling HATO and KATO kamikaze pilots would be unbelievably funny....

So I did...

Oh, how I laughed....
