The following email has just been forwarded to me from a trusted Met Police officer.

Subject: Variable Speed Cameras M25 Jct 10 -15
To Operational Officers,
I have received information from RPU Traffic Management that the company who look after the Variable Speed cameras between Jct 10 - 15 on the M25 on behalf of the Metropolitan police are ACTIVATING the cameras from 15/02/08. The current cameras are analogue and the speed for enforcement is set at 93mph. However the system is changing to Digital and the Commissioner as directed the company to set the cameras at ACPO guidelines, this will be 80mph.

I suggest that any incident you attend and have to use the M25 you put a marker in your PNB with the Icad number as this will no doubt create more work for the Inspector and Sgts to investigate speed complaints and the Icad number will assist us with regards to police purpose. If the incident is not police purpose then YOU will be liable for the offence of Speeding.

Full details of when the system goes live Digitally will be circulated once Traffic Management have the details
Regards
System Administrators
Could you forward to all other operational officers as this will affect them as well as majority use M25 to get around

....this does not bode well for M25 travel!! That section is usually clear and is safe for speeds around 80.....oh well, just adds more time to the commute i guess!!

Frankly they'd be lucky to catch anyone doing more than 50mph on the M25. It's not called the world's biggest car park for nothing.

Brilliant, lets give operational officers with a thousand things on their minds something else to think about.

This sounds like one of the the usual scaremonger emails which go around from time to time. AFAIK the gantry cameras are usually off unless a temporary speed limit is imposed and even then there is usually only 1 lane with a camera installed and most of the gantries don't have any cameras on them anyway.
Anyone got any info which might back up this email?

I've been going through that section at 70 (or 60...or 50...) for years?! Are you telling me that you've all been going through those speed cameras with 90 on your speedos?!

Poor use of capitals, poor punctuation, slack grammar – this has all the hallmarks of a senior officer who has no secretary. The only thing that makes me doubt that this is genuine is that I can find no spelling mistakes.

What about..."the Commissioner as directed the company to set the cameras at ACPO guidelines, this will be 80mph."
?

It has all the hallmarks of one of a batch of regular hoaxes that do the rounds..

And its interesting that there doesn't seem to be evidence of such a system being awarded Home Office Type Approval...scratchchin (not that I could find, anyway..)

maybe someone can go on a fact finding mission after the 15th and drive round that section at 90 mph ?

should find out soon if they work or not, might not have a licence or a full wallet after several cameras ?

There are no cameras on that strecth apart from between J10 and J11 that is unless they've now found a new way to take photos without camera boxes on the gantries. Got that way a few times a day and keep an eye out. They never replaced them after the resurfacing work done over the last couple of years.
