Any chance we can have some news about actual cars today instead of this web traffic grabbing sensationlist guff about crap-government-taxing-us-all-to-death-in-nanny-state-rip-off-Britain that seems to be cropping up here all to often lately?
That is all.
Well, looking at the time you've been here and your post count it must be your turn to start a thread.....That is all.

Interesting, I'm not sure if breaching the low flying rule (<1000ft above ground level) to catch speeding motorists is allowed on a police air operators licence.
How ironic if they were breaking the law in catching speeding motorists!
Oh and completely agree with the fantastic use of taxpayers money comments!

I really struggle to take anyone called 'Captain Gatso' seriously. Wonder if the title comes with a cape and some credibility. "Motorists Against Detection" Is also a dubious name. Sounds awfully like "Criminals Against Being Caught".
Might I suggest "Chris Jones of Motorists For Fairness", perhaps?
I don't remember the last time I heard any credible source cite someone with a super-hero name.

New Driving Test addition.
'Mirror, Signal, Manouvre, Open sunroof - no helicopter, proceed.
'Yes, M'lud, that is correct. The crash involving 18 vehicles was caused by the drivers all looking skywards at the same time. And it is correct that all sustained neck injuries.'
'Yes, M'lud, that is also correct, that the police helicopter pilot did usher the words 'F....g hell, what caused that?'

So - if we are evil enough to drive a car that emits 227g/km of CO2 we are considered to be monumentally evil. However, if the Police want to waste £1,000 an hour of our money, and emit goodness knows how much CO2 into the atmosphere we are supposed to applaud them for their attitude to road safety?
I am sorry, but what on earth is going on? I don't even have the energy to rant about this, I am just so downtrodden by the whole pathetic left-wing, multi-cultural, do-gooding, enviromentalist, "caring", health and safety, politically correct, smug, self-satisfied, economy trashing band of idiots who have minimal experience outside the protective life of Westminster and Public Sector telling us what we cannot do.
What a depressing state of affairs.

Thats what they want
I can't imagine that traffic cops will think this is a good idea. It was interesting in this months Evo mag to see some of the letters from traffic cops in reply to speeding and tolerance. One said that they would prefer to stick to catching real criminals. One also said that they would get rid of all speed cameras. I wonder what their view is on the latest development.

how tremendously ironic that the government can't fund the air ambulances (or RNLI for that matter) but have helicopters spare for this
Yeah, pretty poor really.£1000 per hour to try reduce the UK wide KSI's which at best are ~ 7% of excessive speed above the speed limit, and considering it will be useless in cloud, rain and snow, or in the dark to an extent, then it'll be useless for most excessive speed under the speed limit concerns.
Seems like a good waste of money. I'd rather have two more real TrafPol on the floor in cars acting as a visual deterrent and being effective in loads of roles, than a helicopter soley for catching speeding drivers.
If it's a general purpose chopper with speeding duties in mind however, thats better... but it still seems like stupid role to have in a chopper at that kind of cost. It's not even going to be anywhere near breaking even, and they can't exactly say it was quiet so they did some scamming, a helicopter must be pretty much in 100% use as soon as it takes off with more useful roles than what a man in a van for £1000 a DAY could do!

Ah, what the hell, the government is pissing away billions on the olympics and loosing various wars why not some more on police helicopters. It would be silly to use this money on hospitals and air ambulances would'nt it?Interesting the story say it is only to catch speeding. If that is really the case then it is annoying. However if it is also going to look for bad driving then I'm much more behind it.
From the air they have a unique viewpoint they could use to assess tail gating, lane hogging, etc. I imagine a system where you get sent a DVD with a video of you drving bad and some advice (with references to highway code and generally accepted good driving practice). You would not get a fine unless you get caught doing something stupid again.
